For CBS, a Monday
fix for 'Raymond'

It's the increasingly strong 'Two and a Half Men'

By Diego Vasquez

So much of CBS's concern on Monday night, with "Everybody Loves Raymond” in its last season, has been over what it could slide into its place to keep the network competitive. But that's less and less a concern, and credit goes to the rising strength of second-year lead-out “Two and a Half Men.”
So far this season “Two and a Half Men” has retained just over 96 percent of “Raymond’s” 18-49 audience at 9:30 and actually held on to it all the last time each aired an original episode.

On Oct. 18, new episodes of “Raymond” and “Men” each posted a 5.7 18-49 rating.
For the season "Men" is averaging a 5.8 18-49 rating, just 0.1 behind "Raymond."

“Men” revolves around brothers Charlie and Alan, played by Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, trying to raise Alan’s son Jake, the amusing Angus T. Jones.

This past Monday CBS aired a super-sized edition of “CSI: Miami” that began at 9:30 p.m., leaving only “Raymond’s” usual 9 p.m. half-hour open. The network chose to air a new episode of “Men” in the slot, sort of a gauge as to what it could do if it were to move to that slot permanently next season.
The show responded by posting a respectable 5.4 18-49 rating.

That, along with the 8.1 “CSI: Miami” averaged over its hour and a half, helped CBS finish first for the night in 18-49s with a 6.1 average.

Further, "Men" won up against “Monday Night Football,” which ABC will certainly have to renew if it wants to remain as competitive among viewers 18-49, as it has so far this season.
In a Media Life reader poll last month, several respondents tabbed "Men" as the year's most impressive returning performer.

Sure, CBS could use some help with the comedies it currently airs during the 8 p.m. hour—“Still Standing” and “Listen Up” have yet to catch on with viewers. But that hour almost always belongs to NBC’s “Fear Factor” anyway, especially among 18-49s.

So with the always strong “CSI: Miami” just a lock to return to its Monday 10 p.m. slot next season, look for CBS to post “Two and Half Men” in the 9 p.m. slot and build around it, just as it has done over the past few years with “Raymond.”
Elsewhere on broadcast last week, ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” continued its rise in ratings. Sunday’s episode was last week’s No. 1 show of the week on all of broadcast among viewers 18-49, averaging an 11.1 rating.

That number represented ABC’s highest in that demo for a scripted series since Michael J. Fox’s farewell episode of “Spin City” in May 2000.
