Returning 'Crossing
Jordan' delivers for NBC

After year's rest, bettering ratings of flopped 'Den'

By Diego Vasquez

One reason NBC finished first in the February sweeps is because the network quickly tags problems and fiddles until they're fixed. That's what happened when NBC replaced Sunday-night disaster "Lyon's Den," the quickly canceled Rob Lowe drama, with the steadier "Crossing Jordan."
On March 7, “Jordan” returned from a nearly one-year hiatus during which series star Jill Hennessey took maternity leave.
Since then the show has not only bettered “Den’s” Sunday 10 p.m. ratings, it’s bettering its own from last season.
This past weekend, NBC won Sunday night in viewers 18-49, helped greatly by a strong performance by "Crossing Jordan."
Starring Hennessey as medical examiner Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh, "Crossing Jordan" posted a 4.6 rating in 18-49s Sunday night, a huge improvement over the 3.2 rating "Lyon's Den" averaged in the same demo.
Of course, NBC has no qualms about patching and repatching its schedule until it finds something that works, meaning that most of its shows, and all but two of its comedies, have switched time slots this year.
“Scrubs,” “Will & Grace,” “Whoopi,” “The Tracy Morgan Show,” “Good Morning Miami” and “Happy Family” have all switched slots this year to varying degrees of success. The most successful move has been "Crossing Jordan" to Sunday from last year’s Monday.
“Jordan” was down just 6 percent from last Sunday’s opening 4.9 18-49 rating. Last year the show averaged a 3.9 rating.
In comparison, ABC's "Kingdom Hospital," which did so well with a 5.5 in 18-49s in its debut, moved to a later Wednesday time slot last week, only to lose one-third of its audience in the demo, posting a 3.7. That's 8 percent fewer viewers 18-49 than former time slot occupant "Celebrity Mole" averaged.
Meanwhile, CBS has figured out a way to beat NBC on Thursday nights -- wait until it shows reruns of "Friends."
NBC has begun to air a countdown of classic episodes of "Friends" as voted on by fans online. But since those episodes are already freely viewable in syndication, that gave CBS' "Survivor: All-Stars" a boost as the show posted an 8.7 in 18-49s which, in turn, helped "CSI" finish ahead of "The Apprentice" at 9 p.m.
"Without a Trace" on CBS also did well, winning its time slot among 18-49s on Thursday night with a 6.8 rating, a series-best. Its competition was "Primetime Thursday" on ABC and a special on Princess Diana on NBC, replacing “ER.”
All that said, Fox was the No. 1 of the week in 18-49s with a 4.1 average. "American Idol" performed huge again on both Tuesday and Wednesday and "That ‘70s Show" posted a very solid 5.3 in 18-49s on Wednesday night.
NBC was second in 18-49s with a 3.9 average, CBS third with a 3.6 average. ABC averaged a 2.7, though due to local market pre-emptions from Billy Graham and basketball tournaments, 16 of 25 ABC programs aired with reduced national U.S. coverage ranging between 86 to 98 percent.
