bode well for Oscars

Are we all movie-crazy? Best viewer numbers ever.

   With the Oscars airing a month earlier this year, they could get a boost from the surprising popularity of this year's Golden Globes.
   After nearing record lows last year against the AFC Championship game, this year's football-free Sunday slot gave the Globes a big boost, indicating the same big interest in multiple nominees "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and "Lost in Translation" could feed into next month's Academy Awards.
   NBC's telecast of the 61st annual Golden Globes Sunday was the most-watched program on television last week among households and total viewers. The ceremony was watched by nearly 27 million total viewers.
   This year's awards attracted the most total viewers since debuting on NBC nine years ago and bested last year's show by more than 6 million viewers. The show also scored its best performance among adults 18-49 in five years.
   The Globes delivered an impressive 16.9 household rating to top all three of last week's "American Idol" telecasts. It was the most-watched Sunday non-sports show on NBC since 1999.
   The strong performance of this year's "Golden Globes" ceremony could indicate renewed interest among viewers for the never-ending cavalcade of Hollywood award shows. Viewers' appetite for the ceremonies has waned in the years following the terrorist attacks of 2001.   
   Last year marked a low point for the Oscars, which was watched by only 33.1 million total viewers, the smallest audience for the ceremony since Nielsen began tracking it in 1974.
   The Globes' strong showing pushed NBC past all other networks in weekly household ratings, while also allowing the peacock network to come in second behind Fox's "American Idol"-laden schedule among total viewers and adults 18-49.
   The awards ceremony is put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.  While the organization has been criticized for being composed of part-time journalists and entertainment industry outsiders, this has not prevented the Hollywood establishment from embracing the Golden Globes.
   The awards show originally aired on TBS, but nine years ago NBC negotiated a deal with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to bring the telecast to broadcast television.
