for Fox
from 'American Idol'
Otherwise is mostly
Snoozeville for the networks

Considering the usual sorry state of television
at this time of year, the broadcast networks have to be given credit for
rolling out a long list of original programs this summer.
Reality shows and sports championship games, of course, have
been topping the list of new entries.
But despite a smattering of programs that would seemingly
pull in huge ratings, like the NBA Finals on NBC, viewers have yet to be
moved enough to turn on the tube in any great numbers, based on recent
Nielsen ratings.
Only Fox and CBS have ratings that are up in the adult 18-49
demographic compared to this week last year, while the remaining four
networks are either down or flat.
Fox’s rating is up 18 percent, due almost entirely to its new
reality series, “American Idol: The Search for a Superstar.”
The show’s premiere ranked No. 3 last week with a 4.8
rating in the demo.
And one indication that the show may be a hit is that its
second episode, which competed in much of the country directly with the
concluding game of the NBA Finals last Wednesday, improved on its premiere
by 8 percent and ranked No. 2 with an average 5.2 rating.
Moreover, that episode ranked No. 1 for the week among teens and
women 18-49.
“American Idol” and much of the rest of Fox’s schedule
was strong enough to lift the network from a fourth place finish, due to a
24 percent increase over the previous week’s rating, to rank No. 2.
Fox had a 2.6 in the demo to NBC’s 3.7, CBS’s 2.4 and ABC’s
2.1. UPN had a 1.2 and the WB had a 0.9.
Fox had trouble with its other big entry into summer reality.
“Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska” only tied for No.
55 with a 2 rating, which was down 23 percent from a week earlier.
Fox did well, though, considering the relatively strong
competition on the other networks.
Game Four of the NBA Finals was the week’s most-watched
program with just under 16.6 million viewers.
Although the household rating for the last game of the Finals
was down 4 percent from last year, mostly due to an uneven match between
the winning Los Angeles Lakers and the New Jersey Nets, the last game
still managed to rank as the week’s highest-rated in the 18-49
demographic.
NBC also dominated much of the week with 13 shows in the
top-20.
“Fear Factor,” “Spy TV” and NBC’s strong repeats of
Thursday staples, like “Friends” and “Will & Grace,” all
ranked among the week’s highest-rated in the demo, as did the Monday
drama, “Crossing Jordan,” which has been getting a boost from a “Spy
TV” lead-in.
Despite NBC’s dominance, its rating is down nearly 8
percent compared to this week last year.
ABC’s rating is down 19 percent.
The network’s highest-rated show was “The Mole II,” but
Game Five of the NHL Stanley Cup also did fairly well at No. 31 with a 2.9
rating. Game Four ranked No. 43 with a 2.4.
CBS, meanwhile, ranked No. 3 among adults 18-49 but was No. 2
among households.
The network had the week’s highest-rated show in that
demographic with “CSI,” which did better than the NBA Finals.
And in a true sign that the broadcast networks are
heading into a long summer, the network’s primetime version of “The
Price is Right” scared up more viewers than repeats of NBC’s “Friends”
and “Will & Grace” in head-to-head competition.
The game show had 10.1 million viewers to NBC’s average 8.9
million.
NBC was No. 1 in households for the week, however, with a 6.4
rating and 12 share to CBS’s 6/11, ABC’s 3.7/7, Fox’s 3.6/7, UPN’s
1.9/3 and the WB’s 1.5/3.
