NASCAR
zooms Fox
to a first in 18-49s
Pepsi 400 pairs
with 'Idol' to zip ahead of NBC

Although a slew of reality shows have given Fox a
much-needed ratings boost this summer, the network’s coverage of the
Pepsi 400 on Saturday pushed it to its first weekly win since the regular
season ended in late May in the 18-49 demographic.
The NASCAR post-race show tied at No. 15 for the week with a 3.1
rating and was one of seven Fox shows to rank among the week’s top 20 in
the demo.
And while Fox’s reality shows, including the week’s
top-rated “American Idol: The Search for a Superstar” and the
short-run “Looking for Love: Bachelorettes in Alaska” had higher
ratings, the one-time shot of NASCAR gave Fox a razor-thin advantage over
NBC, which has dominated ratings among adults 18-49 this summer, as it did
in the regular season.
Fox ended the week with a 2.6 adult 18-49 rating to NBC’s
2.5. CBS had a 2.1, ABC had a 1.8, UPN had a 0.9 and the WB had a 0.8.
Fox also benefited from the Independence Day holiday, which
fell on a Thursday and pulled NBC’s rating down on its strongest night
of the week.
Television viewing during the July 4 holiday typically dips to among
the lowest levels of the year. Only about half of all homes watched TV, on
average, last week for a decline of 5 percent from the previous week.
Ratings for NBC’s broadcast of “Macy’s Fourth of July
Fireworks” did well at No. 26 with a 2.6 adult 18-49 rating, but slumped
in comparison to shows like “Will & Grace” that got bumped for the
special.
NBC’s rating in the demo fell one-tenth of a point from a
week earlier.
The network was still competitive, though, with its own
slate of reality shows.
“Dog Eat Dog” ranked No. 2 behind Fox’s “American
Idol” and joined “Fear Factor” and “Spy TV” among the week’s
highest-rated programs.
NBC is also continuing to do well with “Crime &
Punishment,” which tied at No. 8 with a 3.4 rating.
The reality show from Dick Wolf, the creator of NBC’s three
“Law & Order” series, followed a repeat of “Law & Order:
Criminal Intent” and bettered that show’s rating by almost 10 percent.
“Crime” did especially well considering its competition.
It premiered against the last hour of the CBS movie “A Time to Kill,”
which was the week’s second most-watched program with just under 12
million viewers.
CBS, in fact, far outpaced its nearest competitor in
household ratings on the strength of “Time” and regularly scheduled
programs, like “60 Minutes” and a repeat of “Everybody Loves
Raymond.”
While the network is struggling to lure in younger viewers,
particularly since it lacks any significant reality shows until tonight’s
premiere of the third “Big Brother,” the network has continued to do
well among total viewers and household ratings.
CBS last week had a 5.7 household rating and 11 share, which was
about 14 percent better than NBC’s 5/10. Fox had a 3.6/7, ABC had a
3.5/7, UPN had a 1.5/3 and the WB had a 1.4/3.
CBS had 13 shows in the week’s top 25, including the
four highest-rated programs in the demo, and had strong performances with
movies. In addition to “Time,” CBS’s “Murder, She Wrote” movie,
called “South by Southwest,” ranked No. 10 and had more than 8.7
million viewers.
