TV
summer really
belongs to cops
Call it the war of
the 'L&O' and 'CSI' franchises
By Kevin Downey
The notion that if one is good, then two is better only
first caught on in television with the expansion of the “Law & Order”
franchise over the past several years.
But this summer the concept is being pushed to extremes by
both NBC with "L&O" and CBS with "CSI," and with
no small amount of success. Both are not
only repeating well in the off-season but are also regulars among the week’s
top-rated shows.
So it's no surprise that the two shows together will account for five hours of the coming season’s primetime
lineup.
While much of the attention this summer has gone to reality
shows, these two cop shows nonetheless contributed to one of the most competitive
weeks this summer.
Last week, NBC averaged a 2.9 adult 18-49 rating to CBS and Fox’s 2.8 and ABC’s 2. UPN had a 1.2 and the WB had a 1
rating.
The strength of the franchise concept bodes especially well
for “CSI,” which CBS is spinning off into “CSI: Miami” this fall
and is expected to extend further if ratings hold up.
The show ranked No. 2 last week in total viewers with an
audience of 12.7 million that is about half the size of its audience in
the regular season, which ended in May.
“CSI” tied at No. 6 among adults 18-49, while a second
episode on Sunday ranked No. 27 in that demographic.
NBC breathed life into the franchise idea with “Law & Order” and that show still dominates.
NBC had six episodes of the show last week, including five
episodes of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” Four of those ranked
among the top 30 shows in the 18-49 demographic.
The most-watched of those episodes, which aired on a special
night, had a total audience of just under 11.7 million people. That was
only 2 percent lower than its average in the regular season.
Although the franchise shows will be tested once the
networks come off repeats in the fall, last week’s ratings aren’t
likely to go unnoticed by programming chiefs.
Another trend already catching their attention, of course, is
this summer’s long list of highly rated reality shows.
Several of those shows boosted their respective networks with
multiple episodes that nearly monopolized last week’s ratings.
Fox’s “American Idol” had two episodes at No. 1 and No.
2 in the 18-49 demographic, while three episodes of CBS’s “Big Brother
3” made the top 20, including Wednesday and Thursday’s episodes at No.
5 and No. 6.
“Big Brother 3’s” rating is up 6 percent over its
predecessor and Wednesday’s episode ranks as the show's best rating so
far this summer.
Both networks also had top-rated sitcoms, including CBS’s
“Everybody Loves Raymond,” which tied NBC’s “Friends” as the
highest-rated comedy at No. 6.
NBC had its fair share of top-rated reality shows too.
“Dog Eat Dog” ranked No. 3 while “Meet My Folks”
ranked No. 4 among adults 18-49.
Meanwhile, NBC’s new “Rerun Show” is taking a ratings
nose-dive that atrocious reviews suggested it would. The Thursday episode
ranked No. 42 and lost 24 percent of “Will & Grace’s” lead-in
rating. A Tuesday episode ranked No. 49.
ABC is having even less luck with original summer programs.
A rebroadcast of USA Network’s successful “Monk” only
managed a 2.6 rating and tied at No. 42 in the demo, while “ICU:
Arkansas Children’s Hospital” and the short-run “Widows” tied at
No. 73 and No. 80, respectively.
CBS was the top-rated network among households, with a 6 rating and
11 share, compared to NBC’s 5.6/10, ABC and Fox’s 3.9/7, UPN’s 2/4,
and the WB’s 1.5/3.
