|
When your ratings are as
low as UPN’s, it only takes one hit show to give you a significant
boost. And if that boost happens to push you past your main rival,
all the better.
UPN’s biggest hit, “America’s Next Top Model,”
aired its fourth-season premiere on the final night of sweeps last
Wednesday.
The premiere drew the reality show's largest total
audience ever for a debut, 5.1 million, and best premiere rating among adults
18-34, UPN’s target demographic, boosting UPN past the WB for the
week.
“Top Model” averaged a 2.7 18-34 rating and 8
share, third in its 8 p.m. timeslot behind Fox and ABC. Among women
18-34, it averaged a 3.9 rating.
Last fall’s season premiere averaged a 2.3 among
18-34s and a 3.5 among women 18-34, and the January 2004 premiere
averaged a 2.6 among 18-34s.
By now it’s no surprise when “Top Model” premieres big.
What’s significant is the impact it had for UPN.
Week to week, UPN boosted its 18-34 average 29 percent, going
from a 1.4 without “Top Model” to a 1.8 in the week it
premiered. It also went from 0.2 rating points behind the WB to 0.4
ahead the next week.
But even one night of “Model” wasn’t enough to
push UPN past the WB for the entire sweeps period, when the WB
finished with a 0.2 rating point advantage.
UPN averaged a 1.4 18-34 rating during sweeps, down 18
percent from last year’s 1.7, though that was with four weeks’
worth of “Model.” By saving “Model” until the end of
February, UPN assured that it will run through May sweeps,
thus upping its averages for that period. Last year “Model”
ended before May sweeps.
The fact that “Model” can still make such an impact after
four seasons is impressive. Many reality shows don’t even make it
to four seasons. Those few that do, such as “Survivor” and “American
Idol,” tend to age very well.
There’s always some question of when a reality show will
grow stale. It’s already happened to ABC’s “The Bachelor”
and “Bachelorette” and happened after only one season of Fox’s
“Joe Millionaire.”
But “Model” looks as though it will fall into
the “Survivor” category, continuing to boost UPN’s ratings for
at least another two or three seasons.
Elsewhere on broadcast last week, Fox finished No. 1
among adults 18-49 for the sixth-straight week with a 4.4 average,
also ranking first among 18-34s and teens. ABC was second to Fox in
18-49s for the week with a 3.9 average, followed by CBS and NBC at
3.7, UPN at 1.6 and the WB at 1.2.
Among households CBS was tops at 7.6, followed by NBC at 7.4,
ABC at 7.0, Fox at 6.3, UPN at 2.5 and the WB at 2.1.
Fox’s “American Idol” swept the top three spots
among 18-49s, but the ABC movie “Their Eyes Were Watching God”
edged “Idol” for the top spot among households.
“Eyes,” an Oprah Winfrey-produced original that
aired Sunday, was the most-watched movie among total viewers in more
than five years and the highest-rated among 18-49s in three years.
CBS’s “Amazing Race 7,” with “Survivor”
couple Amber and Rob along to goose ratings, debuted to its
best-ever household numbers, averaging a 7.5 for Tuesday’s
two-hour premiere.
