A spurt for Fox
with end of NCAA play
Ending CBS's three-week b'ball winning streak

During the NCAA basketball
tournament,
it looked as though CBS had a shot at catching up with Fox,
finishing ahead in adults 18-49 for three straight weeks and all but
tying Fox's season average.
But with basketball over, CBS took a slide last week,
with Fox finishing comfortably ahead on the power of "American
Idol."
Yet just to ensure it regained the lead, Fox super-sized "Idol" last
Wednesday, using the cover story that it was doing so to provide a stronger lead-out for
the debut of Pamela Anderson’s “Stacked.”
The effect was to boost Fox for the night and also for the
week. It easily won the night with a 7.1 average rating, and "Idol" was the
week's highest-rated program among 18-49s, with a 10.8.
It's hard to say exactly how much Fox gained by super-sizing its
top show, but it had to be substantial. And in any case, whatever it
gained had to have a strong ego-massaging effect for the network,
ensuring not just a win for the week but the strongest possible win.
If Fox had
stuck with the half-hour format for "Idol," it would have been forced
to fill the 9:30 p.m. period, likely with a sitcom rerun, which
would probably have dropped the full hour by several rating points. Fox's sitcoms
routinely pull ratings that are just slightly more than a third of
"Idol's."
For the week ended April 17, Fox averaged a 4.1 rating
in the 18-49 demographic,
up 17 percent from the week before and comfortably ahead of CBS’s
3.6. That was down 5 percent from the week before and 10 percent
from its standing the week ended March 20.
Season-to-date, Fox maintains a slim margin over CBS, a
4.1 rating among 18-49s versus CBS’s 4.0. And both are fairly comfortably
ahead of the other networks, with ABC at 3.8, NBC at 3.6 and UPN and the WB
each at 1.4.
Among households, CBS led last week with a 7.9 average rating and
a 13 share followed by Fox at 6.0/10. NBC’s rerun-soaked lineup
was third at 5.9/10, ABC fourth at 5.2/9, UPN fifth at 2.1/3 and the
WB t at 2.0/3.
In other broadcast ratings last week, viewers preferred
watching women compete for a guy rather than a crown. ABC's
returning “The Bachelor” outpaced the first hour of “Miss USA
2005” last Monday night with a 3.3 rating among 18-49s versus a
3.1.
Fox premiered “Stacked” Wednesday, between “Simple
Life” and its super-sized “Idol,” and to decent numbers. The
show made the top 25 programs of the week among 18-49s with a 3.8
rating and 4.9 million viewers.
