Summer’s top show, again: ‘Talent’

Monday edition of the NBC hit is averaging a 3.7 in 18-49s

There hasn't been much question which show will finish first among total viewers during the summer in recent years.

"America's Got Talent" has a six-year winning streak that's about to become seven.

But the show also looks poised to finish first among adults 18-49 this summer for just the second time.

In a summer with no new hit shows on broadcast, 18-49s continue to flock to old familiars, with "Talent" leading a list of nine veteran shows in the top 10.

"Talent's" Monday edition is averaging a 3.7 rating this summer, according to Nielsen, and the Tuesday edition is averaging a 3.3, making it the No. 1 and No. 2 show.

The only other broadcast Big Four program averaging a 3.0 is Fox's Monday edition of "Hell's Kitchen," which ranked as the No. 1 summer show until last year, when "Talent" knocked it out. "Kitchen" is averaging a 3.0.

Fox also has the No. 4 show, "So You Think You Can Dance," which is averaging a 2.9.

Four shows are tied for No. 5 with a 2.9: "Talent's" Wednesday edition, ABC's "The Bachelorette," the Tuesday edition of "Kitchen" and the Monday edition of "MasterChef."

The first new show doesn't show up until No. 12, NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," though technically it's not a completely new program. Previous seasons aired on G4, and "Ninja" aired a special on NBC last summer that got solid ratings.

The next new show is Fox's "The Choice," which is tied for 22nd with a 1.6.

"Talent's" rise to the top of 18-49s says as much about the show itself as it does the competition. Practically every show is down this year, with hits like "Bachelorette," "Talent," "Big Brother" and "Kitchen" all in at least their seventh year.

This won't be "Talent's" best season, with ratings down from last year. But it remained No. 1 through a controversial judging change that saw shock jock Howard Stern step in for the departing Piers Morgan.

Some conservative groups objected to Stern's addition and threatened boycotts, but the change seems to have helped the show among the younger end of the 18-49 demo.

Among 18-34s, "Talent" is the No. 1 show by just one-tenth of a ratings point over Fox's "Dance."

In broadcast ratings for the week ended July 22:

Among adults 18-49, ABC was first for the week with a 1.5 average rating and a 5 share, followed by Fox at 1.4/5, Univision at 1.4/4, CBS at 1.2/4, NBC at 1.1/4, Telemundo at 0.6/2, ION and CW at 0.3/1, TeleFutura at 0.2/1 and Estrella and Azteca at 0.1/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): Tie-1. ABC's "The Bachelorette" and "The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose" 3.1; Tie-3. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Tuesday" and Fox's "Hell's Kitchen-Monday" and "MasterChef-Monday" 2.6.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Tuesday" 10.17 million; 2. CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" 8.99 million; 3. ABC's "The Bachelorette" 8.86 million; 4. ABC's "The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose" 8.80 million; 5. NBC's "America's Got Talent-Wednesday" 7.61 million.

Show on the rise: ABC's "The Bachelorette," Sunday 8 p.m. The season finale posted a 3.1 among viewers 18-49, up 11 percent from a 2.8 last year when the finale aired on a Monday.

Show on the decline: ABC's "The Glass House," Monday 10 p.m. The "Big Brother" wannabe is fading, last week posting a 0.8 among 18-49s, down 20 percent week-to-week.

Note: Nielsen has decided to stop publicly releasing weekly sports ratings, so Media Life no longer runs the chart.
