Columnist Maureen Dowd is changing her role at The New York Times. She has joined The New York Times Magazine as a staff writer, though she’ll also continue her Sunday column in the newspaper’s Opinion page. Dowd joined The New York Times in 1983 as a metro desk reporter.
New York Media has named Cara Katz advertising director, beginning on Aug. 14. Katz joins from Time Inc./American Express Publishing, where she was director of corporate sales.
Starcom has named Dan Mitz vice president and director of its Deliver practice, reporting to executive vice president and managing director Karla Knecht. Mitz was most recently director of the investment group at Initiative.
Hispanic agency Alma has made a handful of moves, including promoting Rodrigo Vargas from executive producer to director of production. He has been with the agency for five years. Alma has also made two hires, naming Ximena Aguirre senior producer and Marcos Andres Arguello producer. Aguirre was previously at Lapiz Leo Burnett, while Arguello joins from La Comunidad.
Skip Chaisson has joined El Rey Network as senior vice president of creative and on-air promotion, based in the network’s Los Angeles office. Chaisson is also founder and principal of his own production company, Skip Film.
J.J. Murphy, an actor who was set to appear on the upcoming fifth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” collapsed and died on Friday at age 86 after just four days of shooting. There’s no word yet on whether Murphy’s role will be recast. Murphy most recently appeared in the movie “Dracula Untold,” which will be released later this year.
E.B. Moss has been named vice president of marketing solutions at AdLarge Media, which handles audio advertising sales. Moss is a former vice president of strategic marketing and promotions solutions at Cumulus/Westwood One.
TV production and distribution company Sonar Entertainment has made a pair of hires, naming Peter Keramidas executive vice president of planning, strategy and administration and Jenna Glazier senior vice president of television series. Keramidas joins from Warner Bros. studios, Glazier from BermanBraun.
ABC has added Alysia Reiner to the cast of its upcoming Shonda Rhimes drama “How to Get Away With Murder,” in a recurring role as a prosecutor. Reiner most recently appeared on “Orange Is the New Black.”
The Screen Actors Guild Foundation has named Cyd Wilson executive director, replacing the departed Jill Seltzer. Wilson is founder and president of Cyd Wilson Entertainment Marketing, and she’s also a former creative director for the style and entertainment group at Time Inc.
