If Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s political career doesn’t work out, perhaps he will turn to radio. Ford, the controversial figure who in recent months has admitted to smoking crack and delivered a handful of public rants, has agreed to appear on Washington, D.C.’s 106.7-FM show “The Sports Junkies” in a weekly segment talking sports and making NFL picks. The mayor will appear weekly on Thursdays at 8:40 a.m., beginning this week.
TBWA\Chiat\Day has named Rohit Thawani head of digital strategy, working in the agency’s Los Angeles office. Thawani joins from 72andSunny, where he was lead strategist.

The Washington Post has added Radley Balko to its opinion section, where he will write a blog about criminal justice, civil liberties and the war on drugs. Balko was previously a senior writer and investigative reporter at The Huffington Post.

NBC has added three more to its upcoming Winter Olympics coverage team, naming Mary Carillo, Cris Collinsworth and Ato Boldon correspondents. Those three join previously announced correspondent and tennis star Maria Sharapova, who is from Sochi, Russia, where the Olympics will be held. Oddly, none of the three specialize in Winter Olympic sports, but NBC seems more concerned about adding well-known talent than worrying about NFL or track and field commentators speaking about winter sports.
NBC Sports has brought in Jeff Burton as a NASCAR analyst, contributing to race coverage next year on NBCSN. Burton should certainly be able to provide inside information–he’s also scheduled to race in a select number of Sprint Cup races next season.
Cable network TV One has named Shannon Cross news anchor for “News One Now,” working with host and managing editor Roland Martin. Cross was most recently an editor, reporter and on-air personality at ESPN.
Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, better known as former MTV VJ Kennedy, has been named co-host of Fox Business Network’s “The Independents,” working alongside Matt Welch and Kmele Foster. Kennedy joined the network last year as a contributor.
Bill Beckwith, co-host of HGTV’s “Curb Appeal,” died earlier this week at age 38 after crashing his motorcycle in San Francisco. Beckwith co-hosted the show along with John Gidding, Chip Wade and Kimberly Lacy. On its Facebook page HGTV wrote, “Bill was truly a beloved and respected member of our Curb Appeal family and this loss is devastating to us.”
