William Dean Singleton, chief executive officer of Denver Post parent company MediaNews Group, is retiring from his position, although he will remain on as non-executive chairman. Singleton is also publisher of the Post, and he’ll be replaced in that position by the paper’s president and chief executive Mac Tully.
Ariana Stolarz has been named executive vice president and strategy director at MRM East, which includes the company’s offices in New York and Princeton. Stolarz was previously managing director for digital strategy and social media at mcgarrybowen.
Fox International Channels has named Simon Thomas executive vice president of sports and content sales, based in London and reporting to president Hernan Lopez. Thomas joins from TEAM Marketing, where he was chief executive officer.
NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment has made two promotions, naming Bill McGoldrick executive vice president of original content at Syfy and Jackie de Crinis executive vice president of original programming at USA. McGoldrick had been executive vice president of original scripted programming for USA, while de Crinis was senior program executive.
Aaron Stanford and Amanda Schull have joined the cast of Syfy’s pilot “12 Monkeys,” based on the 1995 Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt movie. Stanford most recently appeared on “Nikita,” Schull on “Suits.”
Yves Bougon has taken on additional responsibility at Hearst Magazines International, becoming managing director for East Asia. Bougon, who is also chief executive of Hearst Fujingaho in Japan, will begin his new role on Jan. 1.
Bruce Hallett has been named publisher of the theater magazine Playbill, taking over for the title’s president and chief executive, Philip Birsh. Hallett is a former president at Time and Sports Illustrated.
Atlantic Media has brought in Peter Beinart as a contributing editor, working with both National Journal and The Atlantic. Beinart was most recently senior political writer and editor of the Open Zion blog at The Daily Beast.
Bloomberg Businessweek has named Kurt Soller deputy editor, working with the Etc. section. Soller had been features editor at New York Media’s fashion web site, The Cut.
“Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan will guest on NBC’s “Community,” playing a man who instigates drama between Alison Brie and Danny Pudi’s characters. The fifth season of the sitcom premieres on Jan. 2.
B.B. Andersen, a contestant on CBS’s “Survivor” during its first season, died last week at age 77 after battling brain cancer. Andersen, who worked as a real-estate developer and contractor, was the second person voted off the show in the season won by Richard Hatch.
Actor Gael García Bernal has joined the cast of Amazon Studios’ comedy pilot “Mozart in the Jungle,” according to Deadline, which comes from Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers. Bernal will play a classical music conductor who is overly concerned with his image.
