Heading 'North'
to Fox's new Thursday

Hawaii-based soap opera returns, but will it thrive?

The denizens of Fox's "North Shore" are just as pretty, though a few years older, than their "OC" counterparts, and they have an increased glamour factor (Hawaii versus California). They also get in fistfights and lavish camera love on bikini-clad damsels.
So why haven't they achieved "OC"-like success? Well, for one thing, the show needs to take itself a little less seriously. A dry Adam Brody type would take care of this nicely.
Second, it may want to lay off the "90210" stunt casting. That has yet to work for a Fox Thursday show -- "Tru Calling's" Jason Priestley would be exhibit A.
Still, there are things to like about the cheesy show, which returns from a baseball playoffs break to its new 9 p.m. time slot. Much of its performance will probably depend on how "The OC" performs, but Fox can't be expecting much when it faces CBS's "CSI" and NBC's "The Apprentice." That would have been difficult even for Brenda Walsh to overcome.
