Right happy March
Madness for ESPN

Sockeroo viewer boost for women's basketball

By Diego Vasquez

March Madness has been much happiness so far this tournament season for ESPN.
Through the regional semifinals, ESPN and ESPN2’s coverage of the 2004 NCAA women’s basketball tournament has achieved the network’s highest ratings since 1999, compared to previous years through this point in the tournament. ESPN2’s ratings are the network’s highest ever.
ESPN’s coverage of the tournament is 33 percent higher than last year, rising from a 0.6 household rating to a 0.8.
That's part of a bigger boost ESPN has seen this season.
During the first quarter, ESPN hit record ratings among men 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54. Along with the women’s tournament, coverage of NBA basketball, NCAA basketball and even spring training coverage of Major League Baseball have increased.
Meanwhile, ESPN originals “Pardon the Interruption” and “Around the Horn” have shown increases of 29 and 50 percent among households.
And, of course, ESPN was popular with young men during the quarter, leading all ad-supported cable networks in total-day men 18-34 and 18-49.
Further down the menu guide, Turner fraternal twins TNT and TBS also set some quarterly records. TNT posted the highest-ever quarter among adults 25-54 in total day; TBS had ad-supported cable's best-ever quarter in 18-34s in total day.
Also, TNT was first in total 18-49s in both primetime and total day.
Cartoon Network ranked No. 3 overall among basic cable networks. Adult Swim, Cartoon Network’s franchise for mature viewers, was top in its time period in 18-34s and 18-24s. “Ed, Edd n Eddy” and “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy” also did well.
