The hot midseason
show: Fox's 'Wonderfalls
'

Readers: And over on cable it's HBO's 'Deadwood'

Fox has had difficulty launching successful dramas this year, with "Skin" flopping last fall and "Tru Calling" barely hanging on through midseason.
But good news for Fox: One of its new dramas is the most promising show on broadcast this midseason, according to Media Life readers.
Last week we asked readers to give us their midseason report card – which new shows looked the most promising, which networks had the best and worst sweeps, and which networks face the toughest spring.
We asked readers to choose broadcast's most promising program from five shows. Fox’s “Wonderfalls” received 41.1 percent of the vote, with Fox’s “Cracking Up” (a show that received nearly as many negative votes) at 17.7 percent.
CBS’s “Century City” was third at 15.3 percent. Fourth came ABC’s “The D.A.” with 15.3 percent, followed by UPN’s “Game Over” at 4.8 percent.
“Other” received 8.9 percent of the vote, with most people responding that they were not sure which one to choose.
We asked what the least promising midseason show seemed to be. Readers tabbed “Kingdom Hospital” with 24.6 percent of the vote.
That was a hair ahead of the WB’s “The Help” and CBS’s “The Stones,” which tied at 23.8 percent.
NBC’s “Come to Papa” received 15.6 percent and Fox’s “Cracking Up” got 8.2 percent. Four percent voted for “other,” writing in Fox’s “Forever Eden” and UPN’s “Game Over.”
We asked readers to finish this sentence: “The most promising new show on cable is:” and HBO’s “Deadwood” was the first choice with 44.1 percent. USA’s “Touching Evil” followed with 16.9 percent.
“Now Who’s Boss” on TLC got 12.7 percent, A&E’s “Dearly Departed” received 11.9 percent, and Sci Fi’s “Mad Mad House” got 10.9 percent. Among the 4.2 percent for “other” were two votes for Bravo’s “Significant Others.”
We asked “Which network had the least successful sweeps?”
Half of you chose ABC. UPN, which actually made gains in every major demographic, was chosen by 21.1 percent while the WB received 18 percent of the vote. Fox got 4.7 percent, CBS 3.9 percent and NBC 2.3 percent.
We asked, “Which network has the toughest task ahead of it this spring?” and once again the resounding response was ABC with 52.7 percent of the vote.
Adults 18-49 February sweeps victor NBC received 17.1 percent of the vote, followed by UPN at 10.9 percent and Fox at 10.1 percent.
Seven percent chose the WB and just 2.3 percent chose CBS.
As for who had the most successful sweeps, total viewers and households winner CBS was the clear choice with 53.5 percent of the vote.
NBC followed with 27.1 percent and Fox was third with 11.6 percent. UPN finished slightly ahead of ABC with 3.9 percent to the latter’s 3.1 percent while the WB, down in every sweeps category, got 0.8 percent.
We asked, “Which midseason return are you most anticipating?” and 46.9 percent chose HBO’s “The Sopranos,” with Showtime’s “Queer as Folk” second with 12.5 percent. NBC’s struggling “Miss Match” received 11.7 percent, and FX’s “The Shield” and NBC’s “Crossing Jordan” tied with 10.9 percent. The WB’s “High School Reunion” received 3.1 percent and 3.9 percent chose “Other.”
Readers stayed high on HBO when asked to predict which cable network would get the biggest boost from a returning show; 67 percent chose HBO for “Sopranos.”
FX and “The Shield” were second with 20.6 percent, followed by Showtime for “Queer as Folk” at 6.1 percent, Travel Channel for “World Poker Tour” at 4.6 percent and BBC America for “What Not to Wear” at 1.5 percent.
Finally, we asked which TV movie you were most looking forward to. The vote was fairly even, with NBC’s “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of ‘Charlie’s Angels’” finishing first with 25.6 percent. Next came CBS’s gory “Helter Skelter” at 19.8 percent, ABC’s “Judas” at 17.4 percent, USA’s “The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss” and Showtime’s “The Lion in Winter.” Just over 6 percent chose “Other,” with all but one saying they weren’t looking forward to any movies.
