Todd turns his life
over to America

FX show lets viewers vote on his dinner or love life

Todd seems like a regular guy: he works at a restaurant, plays guitar, and goes on dates. But for seven weeks, he will throw himself at the mercy of the FX audience to determine his every move. Why? Good question.
In what can only be considered cable television’s most desperate ploy yet, “Todd TV,” which premieres tonight at 10 p.m., is apparently the result of a programming meeting gone awry. When the network can’t think of a gimmick for a reality show, they choose to leave it in up to their audience to determine Todd’s every move.
Five reasons this show is a bad idea:

  1. Sure, FX features some innovative new programming in “Nip/Tuck” and “The Shield,” but does the network really want to the risk leaving its programming decisions in the hands of the people who watch reruns of “Married… With Children” and “Extreme Dating?”
  2. It’s one thing to make a phone call to vote for “American Idol.” It’s quite another to have to think of what someone else should be doing. Most television audiences are looking for a break from their day, not a babysitting job. If a reality show depends on its audience and nobody watches, will FX know that means to cancel the show?
  3. Todd has a roommate, whose most intelligent comment to date is “I like girls.”
  4. Sure, “Cops” is fun to watch, but most Americans aren’t lucky enough to lead such an interesting life. Can thousands of couch potatoes possibly make good TV?
  5. Who is Todd and why should we care? If he’s so willing to be manipulated on national television, shouldn’t he be starring in CBS’s next made-for-TV movie instead?
