Ho & yo from
JibJab's 'Grumpy Santa'

Election spoof duo has a new hit animated short

By Diego Vasquez

When Yahoo hired Lloyd Braun back in January, it surely had in mind deals like the one announced last week teaming the giant portal with the boys from JibJab.com, the site that was so popular during election season with its presidential spoofs.
The deal gives Yahoo, or more specifically Yahoo! Movies (movies.yahoo.com), the exclusive rights to distribute JibJab’s latest two animated shorts, one titled “Grumpy Santa,” which launched last Thursday, and another called “Inauguration Day,” which debuts around Jan. 17 for Bush's swearing in for his second term in the White House.
The early results for "Santa" are in, and it looks as if JibJab.com has another hit on its hands.
According to internet tracking company Hitwise, JibJab.com increased its market share of U.S. internet visits by 347 percent Dec. 16, the day “Grumpy Santa” was released.
That day it jumped from No. 17 to No. 4 in Hitwise’s Entertainment – Humor category, as well as from No. 6 to No. 1 in the company’s Lifestyle – Politics category.
For the week ended Dec. 18, JibJab.com accounted for 2.36 percent of all U.S. visits to Hitwise’s Humor category, putting it at No. 6.
In Hitwise’s Politics category the site captured 5.5 percent of all the visits, placing it at No. 3 for the week.
“Grumpy Santa” is a holiday spoof featuring a disgruntled Kris Kringle singing to the tune of “Jingle Bells” and complaining about operating in the red because he spends all his money making toys but gets nothing in return. In the short Santa grumbles about having high blood pressure and his sleigh repossessed.
With the “Grumpy Santa” clip available on both the JibJab and Yahoo! Movies sites, the week ended Dec. 18 saw visitors moving back and forth between the two.
During the week Yahoo! Movies increased its market share of visits in Hitwise’s Entertainment – Movies category by 9.4 percent versus the previous week, finishing in its usual No. 2 spot (behind imbd.com).
Yahoo! Movies finished the week with 11.5 percent of the market share of visits to the Movies category, with 2.9 percent of its visits coming straight from JibJab.com. During the previous week JibJab.com didn’t account for any visits to Yahoo! Movies.
Similarly, Yahoo! Movies provided JibJab with 8.16 percent its visits during the week ended Dec. 18.

During the election season, JibJab attracted more than 80 million visitors for its two clips, "This Land" and "Good to be in DC!," and traffic on some weeks  pushed it to No.1 among political web sites, ahead of sites for Bush and Kerry.
