Fox aired the second season finale of “The
Swan” last night, the guilty pleasure pageant portion of the series
where a swarm of made-over women compete for the “Swan” title.
The winner was DeLisa S., but the loser ended up being Fox,
which was off by 23.8 percent among viewers 18-49 versus last season’s
“Swan” finale, even on a night that was otherwise filled with reruns
and football.
Last night’s two-hour capper averaged a 3.2 18-49
rating according to Nielsen fast national data, compared to a 4.2 for the
May 24th season one finale.
“Monday Night Football” accounted for TV’s
highest-rated hour among 18-49s last night, averaging a 6.1 rating during
the 9 p.m. hour. That led ABC to a first place finish for the night with a
5.2 average rating and 14 share. CBS finished second at 4.3/11, Fox third
at 3.2/8, NBC fourth at 2.7/7, UPN fifth at 1.1/3, and the WB sixth at
1.0/3.
At 8 p.m., ABC led with a 3.5 average 18-49 rating for
the special “TV Guide: Greatest Moments 2004.” NBC was second that
hour with a 3.2 average for a rerun of “Fear Factor.” CBS averaged a
2.9 rating for repeats of “Still Standing” (3.1) and “Listen Up”
(2.8), tying it for third with Fox for the first hour of “The Swan”
finale.
At 9 p.m. ABC led with its 6.1 average for the first
hour of the “Monday Night Football” game between the New England
Patriots and Miami Dolphins. CBS was second with a 5.0 average for repeats
of “Everybody Loves Raymond” (5.1) and “Two and a Half Men” (5.0),
followed by third-place Fox’s 3.6 average for the last hour of “The
Swan.”
ABC’s “MNF” led again at 10 p.m. with a 5.8
average, followed by CBS with a 4.9 average for a rerun of “CSI: Miami.”
NBC was third that hour with a 2.3 average for a “Las Vegas” repeat.
ABC finished first for the night among households,
averaging a 9.1 rating and 14 share. CBS finished second at 8.8/14, NBC
third at 4.7/7, Fox fourth at 4.6/7, the WB fifth at 2.0/3, and UPN sixth
at 1.9/3.
"Swan's” weak finale may be
partly explained by "MNF," which wasn't on in March. But just
how many football viewers would otherwise have turned to "The
Swan" is an open question. But certainly the show was hurt by the
holiday season, which is seeing a drop across primetime.
