They say there are no second acts in America, but there’s apparently room for second-chance victories for Howard Dean and Martha Stewart, two of the past months’ most notorious losers.
   Both have the chance to follow spectacular public flameouts with a win, albeit one of far less consequence than they would have hoped for two months ago.
   Sites for each were among the nominees for the Eight Annual Webby Awards, known as the Oscars of the internet. The Webbys, sponsored by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, honor the best of the web in 30 different categories, including politics and commerce, where Howard and Martha are nominated.
   This is the third major awards category in which Stewart has been nominated since her conviction last month on charges of obstruction of justice and lying to investigators. Stewart properties are also up for several Daytime Emmys and National Magazine Awards.
   The Martha Stewart Living magazine site was nominated in the commerce category, which looks extremely competitive. Other nominees are eBay, Apple’s iTunes, Netflix and Big Fun Toys.
   Dean’s Blog for America, which became the site of Democracy for America after the Dean for America Democratic presidential campaign fizzled last month, is nominated in the politics category alongside MeetUp.com, the New York Times’ political campaigns site, the Center for Responsive Politics and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
   PBS led all nominees with a record six, including three in youth, two in TV and one in broadband.
   The BBC led an all-time high 29 international nominees with five nods, including one each in education, sports, science, news and best practices.
   Other multiple nominees included iTunes (commerce, music and services); Meetup.com (politics and services); Google (best practices and services); Noggin (broadband and TV), Wikipedia (best practices and community); and Live 365 (music and radio).
   The Webbys and the People’s Choice winners, which can be voted on at http://www.webbyawards.com/peoplesvoice through May 7, will be awarded May 12, when winners can deliver acceptance speeches of five words or less.
