less of a good thing

Not-so-hot turnouts for shows featuring Stewart

   Martha Stewart may be all over the news these days but that doesn't mean folks will necessarily choose to tune into see her hold forth.
   Appearances on ABC's "20/20" and CNN's "Larry King Live" seem to prove that after months of Martha mania, people are sick of her. 
   Eight months after appearing on ABC's "20/20" to discuss her upcoming trial, Stewart popped back in for a visit with Barbara Walters last Friday night, hours after she was sentenced.
   Though there was little competition, Stewart's audience dropped by more than one-third from her November sit-down with Walters.
   Still, ABC can't be disappointed by the numbers.
   Things are generally slow in summer, and the network had only a few hours to promote the interview. And there's also the likelihood that viewers, having seen Stewart all day, were not all that interested in hearing more of and about her.
  Walter's November sweeps interview with Stewart averaged 13.9 million viewers and a 4.2 adults 18-49 rating.
   Friday's interview pulled 8 million total viewers. That's a pretty steep drop, even though the show still finished No. 1 for the night. It was also No. 1 in 18-49s (2.2 average rating) and 25-54s (2.7 rating).
   Even Stewart's appearance on "Larry King Live" on CNN Monday, which had the benefit of more advertising time, mustered just 2.01 million total viewers.
   Perhaps now Stewart will get the idea and scuttle out of the spotlight. But even a diluted Stewart was still a good thing for ABC, which had its best weekend showing of the summer.
   Sunday's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” averaged a 4.7 18-49 rating, not only making it the most-watched show of the night, but the most-watched of the week in the demo, outside of Fox’s coverage of the MLB All-Star Game.
   The show represented ABC’s highest 18-49 rating during the Sunday at 9 p.m. time slot in almost three years, excluding sports.
   That helped an hour later, when ABC launched its new series “The Days” right after its successful airing of “Home Edition,” and it became 18-49s’ highest-rated drama debut of the summer.
   “The Days’” 3.0 average rating in the demo also gave it a higher debut than Fox’s launch of “The O.C.” last summer, which posted a 2.9 rating in 18-49s.
