'SpongeBob,' make
room for 'Fear Factor'


Surprising strength among kids from 2 to 14

   When we think of kid viewers, we think of shows like “SpongeBob SquarePants," with shows like NBC's "Fear Factor" pulling more mature audiences.
   But that's not the way it was last week, when a special episode of the NBC gross-out reality show drew its best ratings ever overall and proved especially powerful among younger viewers.
   The show ranked No. 1 among kids 9-14 and No. 8 among kids 2-11, in a category where cable shows almost always dominate the top 20.
   But among 2-11s, “Fear Factor’s” 6.2 rating was just .5 off perennial category leader “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
   In fact, “Fear Factor” and “SpongeBob” actually squared off at 8 p.m. on Monday. The Nickelodeon show, which accounted for six of the top 10 spots among 2-11s, drew a 6.1, .1 behind “Fear Factor.”
   “Fear Factor” became the first non-Fox program to rank No. 1 among 9-14s in weeks. “Joe Millionaire,” “The Simpsons” and “American Idol” have dominated the category since the February sweeps, but “Fear Factor’s” 8.2 rating was .3 ahead of the Tuesday version of “Idol.”
   The older the audience, the farther “Fear Factor” dipped in the ratings, but the show has clearly become a hit.
   It ranked in the top 10 for every major demographic while pulling in its biggest viewership ever, thanks to the special trip to Las Vegas.
   NBC supersized the episode to 90 minutes and thus also helped “Fear Factor” to another first. The show outdrew an original episode of the CBS hit “Everybody Loves Raymond” among 18-49s at 9 p.m.
   For the past two weeks, NBC has pre-empted its older-skewing “Third Watch” and “Crossing Jordan” in favor of 90-minute “Fear Factor” and “Meet My Folks.”
   Though some viewers complained of missing those shows, NBC’s move proved smart. Both dramas attract an audience, but not nearly as large as “Fear Factor’s.”
   And the “Fear Factor” audience simply doesn’t funnel well into the 9 p.m. “Third Watch.” It is very compatible with the low-brow “Folks,” which ranked No. 22 among 9-14s, No. 14 among 12-17s and No. 14 among 12-24s.
   ABC had a dismal week among viewers 18-34 and 18-49. The network had just one show, “Alias,” rank in the top 30 in a week when most shows were in reruns.
   Among 18-24s, the only ABC show in the top 30 was No. 28 “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
   Even cable’s “WWE Smackdown” on TNN and “Real World” on MTV finished higher than that.
   NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” was the only non-primetime show to rank among the top 30 for 18-34s, placing just below “Alias.”
   An original episode of NBC’s “Friends” easily outdistanced “American Idol” for No. 1 among 18-34s and 18-24s. “Idol,” it seems, is more popular with the older crowd, where it finished tied for first with CBS’s “CSI” among 18-49s.
