And the winner
is . . .'Top Model'

Summer's one reality show that's gaining viewers

By Toni Fitzgerald

It almost sounds silly to call “America’s Next Top Model” a surprise hit. Tyra Banks plus assorted other gorgeous girls in bikinis would seem a can't-miss ratings-grabber.
But considering the network is UPN and the time a dead zone, Tuesdays at 9 p.m., where five UPN shows and counting have been canceled since fall 2001, “Top Model” had a lot going against it.
Consider it, then, another case in which babes overcome adversity.
Amid a plethora of summer reality shows, “Top Model” is the only one consistently gaining audience as its limited run progresses.
It debuted after the series finale of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” on May 20 to a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating and 4 share.
Last week the show averaged a 1.8/5, a 20 percent rise. Even more impressive is how much “Top Model” has improved on the shows that aired in the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot earlier this year.
The series finale for the critically acclaimed “Platinum” averaged a 1.1 18-49 rating the week before “Top Model” premiered. And by the end of its limited run, the midseason replacement comedy “Abby” was lucky to go above a 1.0 18-49 rating.
Banks, who hosts and executive produces the show, has helped it average a 2.2 rating and 7 share among 18-34s, a 91 percent increase over the time slot’s previous occupants.
Ratings have increased 136 percent among women 18-34 in the time slot, giving UPN its most successful Tuesdays at 9 show ever among that demographic.
The most recent episode ranked fourth in its time slot among 18-49s, finishing ahead of a “Smallville” rerun on the WB and a “Guardian” rerun on CBS and just 14 percent behind an original “Keen Eddie” on Fox.
UPN is so pleased that the network renewed the show last week.
It’s been part of a successful summer thus far. The network’s top-rated show, Thursday’s “WWE Smackdown,” has combined with “Model” to help UPN finish ahead of the WB five straight weeks among 18-49s and households.
UPN, which finished behind the WB in both during the regular season, has averaged a 1.22 18-49 rating in that span, 12 percent ahead of the WB.
It has averaged a 2.02 household rating, 11 percent ahead of the WB.
As the conclusion of NBC’s “For Love or Money” draws closer, the summer reality show registered an uptick among 18-49s.
It finished fourth for the week and had its best ratings in three weeks, averaging a 4.0. It was one of five summer reality shows on NBC to show week over week gains among households.
The summer return of ABC’s “The Drew Carey Show,” which was bumped from the regular season schedule after poor performances in two time slots, proved much kinder than the fall.
The show had its best 18-49 and total audience numbers since its September premiere. Episode one at 9 p.m. Wednesday finished No. 1 in its time slot among men 18-49 and kids 2-11.
