Group merges with Yahoo for broadband Britain is saying yes to Yahoo and bye-bye to BT OpenWorld. The latter, one of the country’s first internet services, will be replaced in September with a new joint broadband venture between parent BT Group and Yahoo. The new service will be called BT Yahoo Broadband. Current BT OpenWorld customers will transition to the new service this fall. The BT Broadband service that recently began has cut into BT OpenWorld’s base because it’s slightly cheaper. Yahoo will offer some extras not available to BT Broadband customers, such as Yahoo news headlines, customized browser and homepage, and other editorial content. Yahoo already has a similar deal in place with SBC Communications, and the company says it is seeking others, though it did not specify where. BT wants to get 2 million broadband subscribers by next year at this time and more than double that by mid 2006. NBC mulls HDTV channel for 2004 Olympics What more can NBC do to beef up its sap-heavy Olympic coverage? How about a little technology tossed in with those gold-medal tear-jerkers? NBC Cable Networks president David Zaslav confirmed this week that the network is considering a high definition channel for the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. Zaslav said that a decision will be made in the next four weeks. He claims that cable operators have expressed interest in the idea. The channel would include “a little bit of everything,” so probably a few of the weepy features. But it would also include expanded programming that’s not offered on regular cable extensions MSNBC and CNBC. Some of the programming may be delayed on the HDTV channel; much of it will be taped to air on NBC in primetime. Goalie's jail ID surfaces on eBay three years later It’s amazing what shows up for sale on eBay these days and what people actually will go through to get the items. Three years after the incident that landed former Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy in jail, his jail identification badge was retrieved from an Arapahoe County jail. Replicas of the ID have popped up for sale on the internet, prompting the sheriff to discipline eight to 10 deputies and consider charging two non-policemen with felony. Roy was arrested on misdemeanor criminal mischief charges during a domestic violence episode in October 2000 after an argument with his wife. Apparently the brother of a deputy actually stole the replica. His girlfriend put it up for bid on eBay, which attracted police attention. Roy recently retired after 18 seasons in the NHL. Bush's balance in question after Segway incident President Bush’s weekend adventure with a Segway scooter was reminiscent of Bush the elder’s first encounter with a grocery store scanning device. It didn’t go well. During the 1992 presidential campaign, George H.W. Bush famously expressed amazement over the commonplace machine, after which many labeled him out of touch with the American public. Bush the younger had a similarly embarrassing techie incident this weekend, but he should walk away unscathed, which is more than the Segway itself can claim. During a weekend trip to Kennebunkport, Maine, for former President Bush’s birthday, current President Bush hopped on a Segway scooter while holding a tennis racket. Bush had never tried a Segway before, and it immediately began to fall. Bush managed to push off the machine and jump over it as it crashed. On his second try, the president didn’t hurt anyone else or himself and actually rode down the driveway with Bush the elder by his side on another scooter. The entire Bush family then passed them around the rest of the day. June 17, 2003© 2003 Media Life Click
