The Bachelorette

Mister Sterling

  'Joe Millionaire' isn't
the only hot new show

'Bachelorette,' 'Surreal Life,' Star Search' . . .

By Toni Fitzgerald

Viewers apparently were sick of the same old shows.
They sampled a variety of new programs last week, most of them reality series, as the midseason replacements hit the air.
Fox's much-publicized "Joe Millionaire" looks as if it will be the breakout hit, but ABC's "The Bachelorette", the WB's "Surreal Life," CBS's "Star Search" and NBC's "Mister Sterling" all managed strong debuts somewhat lost amidst "Joe's" deserved hype.
ABC’s “The Bachelorette” gave first-season “Bachelor” castoff Trista Rehn a chance to pick her mate. It also gave ABC a 6.4 18-49 rating, ahead of NBC’s Wednesday time slot competitor “The West Wing.”
Although ABC’s “Celebrity Mole” lost some “Bachelorette” lead-in, the series nonetheless performed decently against NBC’s powerful “Law & Order.” “L&O” earned a 7.1 18-49 rating in the 10 p.m. slot while “Mole” managed a 5.2.
The WB’s “Surreal Life” gave the network its best-ever Thursday night debut in 18-34s (3.6) and 18-49s (2.8) in the tough 9 p.m. slot, facing NBC’s “Will & Grace” and CBS’s “CSI.” It did especially well among women 18-34 (4.0).
“Surreal Life” even managed to best UPN’s WWE program in its second half-hour.
On CBS, the re-jiggered “Star Search,” with overexposed Jack Osbourne as a guest judge, won its Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot among 18-49s with a 5.1. But once Fox’s “American Idol” returns to that slot next week, “Star” may have trouble replicating those numbers.
There were actually a few non-reality shows among the debuts, too. CBS’s Friday “Queens Supreme” looks like as much of a ratings stinker as the show it replaced (the critically acclaimed “Robbery Homicide Division”). The show ranked third in 18-49s in its 10 p.m. slot with a 2.6 rating. That’s the same rating “Robbery” scored in its debut.
Also Friday, “Mister Sterling” may prove that NBC was, indeed, correct to cancel the weeper “Providence.” Network executives had been recasting “Providence’s” December series finale as a season finale, reopening the possibility of a fifth year.
“Sterling” managed a 3.5 18-49 rating last week. For comparison, the much-publicized two-hour “Providence” finale recorded a 3.7 rating.
Of course, the new series still only edged ABC’s workhorse “America’s Funniest Home Videos” by .1.

The network most in need of a hit, the flailing Fox, seems to have finally found one with “Joe.”
Airing in the Monday at 9 p.m. time slot that originally housed David E. Kelley’s “girls club,” "Joe" scored the best series debut numbers of any new show this season.
“Joe’s” strong numbers, combined with a primetime NFL playoff game Saturday night, pumped Fox to its second-best weekly adults 18-49 average of the season. Its 5.2, which led all networks, was behind only the 5.6 the network scored during the World Series in October.
Fox needed a surge, after its ratings dropped by nearly a third during the November sweeps. The network took full advantage of its huge football audiences this season by starting to run “Joe” previews back in early December.
“Joe” earned a 10.1 18-49 rating last week, placing first in its time slot in the major demographics and improving on lead-in “Boston Public’s” ratings by 75 percent.
“Joe” placed behind only two network series, “Friends” and “ER,” to rank No. 6 last week among 18-49s (three football games took the other spots).
Perhaps more surprising is that “Joe” retained much of its audience this week. It earned a 10.0 18-49 rating during its second half-hour Monday, presumably surging when viewers clicked away from CBS’s 9 p.m. “Everybody Loves Raymond.”
