'I left that
 sponge somewhere'

  Pass the smelling
salts. Conked 'ER.'

In matchup, 'CSI' leaves NBC top drama on floor

By Toni Fitzgerald

So which program on NBC’s once-invincible Thursday schedule is getting the creakiest? “ER.”
CBS has recognized the trend during sweeps by pitting supersized "CSI" against the once-unbeatable NBC show.
"ER" used to be TV's No. 1 drama. It's been No. 2 this season behind "CSI," but there's usually no direct competition between the two shows.
Thanks to 90-minute "Survivor: Amazon" and "CSI" last week, CBS got its first chance to test "CSI" against "ER."
The prognosis was much better for CBS.
For the first time ever, an original "ER" finished second in its time period in viewers, households and 18-49s.
CBS and NBC both ditched the weak links in their Thursday schedules (“Without a Trace” and “Good Morning Miami,” respectively) last week, resulting in a combined 28 18-49 share.
CBS earned its first Thursday February sweeps win (excluding Olympics) among key demos since 1993’s finale of “Alex Haley’s Queen” miniseries, before “ER” and “Friends” were even on the air.
The Eye debuted the boys vs. girls sixth edition of “Survivor” at 8 p.m. Thursday against an original “Friends” on NBC.
During that first half-hour, “Friends” fared better among 18-49s, but a supersized repeat at 8:30 faded against “Survivor.”
The show built its audience during each successive half-hour, topping out at a 9.1 rating and 22 share among 18-49s for a final hour that beat both “Friends” and the supersized “Will & Grace” that it bled into.
CBS’s smartest move, though, was to schedule a 90-minute “CSI” at 9:30. That meant the medical examiner drama got a half-hour head start over NBC’s 10 p.m. doctor drama, “ER.”
“CSI” averaged a 10.5/25 to “ER’s” 10.1/24 among 18-49s, the first time in its nine seasons that “ER” failed to win its time slot. “CSI” also had a 13 percent edge in 25-54s.
The night marked CBS’s best household, viewer and adults 25-54 showing since the “Survivor: The Australian Outback” finale in May 2001, and its best 18-49 performance since January 2002’s “Survivor: Africa” finale.
The sweeps “bad taste” award for the night went to ABC, which tripled its usual Thursday 9 p.m. 18-49 ratings with the skinfest “Are You Hot?” The show’s 4.5 rating tied for 29 last week.
It was ABC’s best Thursday night debut among 18-34s since “My So-Called Life” in August 1994.
Riding a spurt of stunt programming and reality show controversy, Fox finished its third-straight week as the No. 1 network among adults 18-49.
Fox commercials for last week’s “Joe Millionaire” made it seem like faux millionaire Evan Marriott was going to make his final choice on Monday’s 9 p.m. show.
Never mind that, had savvy viewers checked their TV schedules, a two-hour show was planned for the very next week.
Lifted by the surge of curious viewers, “Joe” ranked No. 1 among 18-49s by a full two rating points, besting second-place “CSI” with a 12.9.
Another controversy, this one on Fox’s “American Idol,” also got national attention when popular Frenchie Davis was booted by producers for posing topless on an alleged kiddie porn web site.
Both editions of “AI” finished in the week’s top 12, giving Fox half of the top 12 programs.
Special editions of “The Simpsons” and “Married … With Children Reunion” placed in the top 10, giving Fox its best nonsports 18-49 Sunday ratings in more than five years
