Early premieres
boost ABC and WB


Strong 'MNF' gives week to the Disney network

     Television ratings are getting all screwy now that the summer is ending and the broadcast season is set to kick off on Monday with the premiere of dozens of new shows.
    Gone are the predictable ratings of the off-season, when NBC dominated and Fox’s hit “American Idol” grew into a fixture at No. 1.
   With us now are big ratings for slumping networks like ABC and the WB that are getting a boost from season premieres that are mostly competing with repeats on the other networks.
   Ten programs premiered last week, including ABC’s "Monday Night Football" and “Drew Carey” and the WB’s “Family Affair,” which helped both networks post week-to-week increases.
   ABC did especially well.
   The network had its best ratings in months and ranked No. 1 in most major demographic groups on the strength of football.
   The game between Pittsburgh and New England was the week’s most-watched program with an audience of 19.1 million people. Monday Night Football also improved on last year’s premiere rating in key demographic groups. The game’s rating was up 25 percent among men 18-34, for example.
   The game was No. 1 among adults 18-49 and pre-game coverage ranked No. 2.
    ABC’s season premieres of “Drew” and “Whose Line is it Anyway,” which went on either before or after the game depending on where they aired, ranked No. 26 and No. 21, respectively, among network TV shows for the week.
    ABC averaged a 3.5 adult 18-49 rating for the week, which was up 52 percent over the previous week and catapulted it to No. 1, from No. 4.
   CBS had a 3.3 rating and got a boost from “CSI,” one “Big Brother 3” episode and the Sept. 11 repeat of “9/11,” all of which ranked among the week’s five highest-rated programs.
    Fox had a 2.9 rating and ended the summer as the only major network to post better ratings than it had last year. Its adult 18-49 rating was up 12 percent, according to the network.
   NBC had a 2.8 last week. UPN had a 1.4.
   The WB averaged a 1.2 and had its best ratings with repeats of “Smallville” and the premiere of the new “Family Affair.” Both shows had a 1.6 rating and ranked No. 68 among network shows. The WB’s 18-49 rating was up one-tenth of a point from a week earlier.
   While ABC and the WB have already premiered new programs, as Fox did with “Cops” and “America’s Most Wanted” and UPN did with “Smackdown,” more are coming this week.
   Perhaps the most anticipated premiere is CBS’s “Survivor: Thailand,” which gets underway on Thursday against a repeat of NBC’s “Friends.”
    Although CBS hasn’t had the type of attention networks like Fox got this summer, it has quietly done well among the adult 18-49 demographic with shows like “CSI” and “Everybody Loves Raymond.” CBS has also consistently been the highest ranked network in households.
   CBS had a 6.6 household rating and 11 share last week, compared to ABC’s 6/10, NBC’s 5.5/10 and Fox’s 4.4/8. UPN and the WB tied with a 2.1/4.
