Cable's suddenly

MTV reality show rocks ahead of 'Real World'

By Mike Jasik

In the ‘70s he was the frontman of the seminal ‘70s metal band Black Sabbath.
In the ‘80s he transformed himself into a wildly popular, bat-decapitating solo rock artist.
In the ‘90s he founded the Lollapalooza of heavy metal tours, “Ozzfest.”
Now, it’s the ‘00s and Ozzy Osbourne is fast becoming a star of cable.
Just three weeks into its run, the MTV reality/family series “Osbournes,” which follows the day-to-day turmoil of Ozzy, his wife Sharon, his two kids, Jack and Kelly, and numerous cats and dogs, is fast becoming one of the most popular shows on cable.
Last week, “Osbournes” finished fourth in household ratings, first in adults 18-34, third in adults 18-49, and fifth in adults 25-54.
Since its premiere on March 5, in which it placed 25th in households, “Osbournes” has seen a 41 percent rise in adult 18-34 viewers, a 29 percent rise in adults 18-49, and 19 percent increase in adults 25-54.
Those increases have largely pushed it ahead of MTV's “Real World,” cable's longstanding top reality series, while driving that show's ratings to new levels.
In the “10 spot” on Tuesdays, leading into “Osbournes,” the 11th edition of “The Real World” drew nearly 3.3 million total viewers, coming in third place in household rankings and one ahead of “Osbournes,” and one spot behind the “Osbournes” in all three demographics, with a second place in adults 18-34, a fourth place in adults 18-49, and sixth place in adults 25-54.
But while MTV littered the tops of the young demographic ratings, it was TNT that took the triple crown last week for the three demos with its multiple showings of the sci-fi kung-fu blend “The Matrix.”
The 1999 blockbuster and raging pop culture phenomenon, though failing to make it into the top-25 household rankings, nonetheless placed ninth and tenth in adults 18-49 and eighth and tenth in adults 25-54.
TNT had better luck with the movie in early December when three broadcasts placed it in the top 10 for households and all three demos.
Meanwhile, Lifetime earned yet another first-place finish in household ratings, thanks again to TV movies.
“The Trophy Wife’s Secret” came in 19th place in household ratings, while the second part of “Deadly Matrimony” managed only a 24th place finish in its Sunday afternoon timeslot.
Hot off a huge premiere, FX’s “The Shield” cooled down a bit last week, drawing 300,000 or so fewer total viewers and falling to seventh place in household ratings.
Most of the losses were among older viewers, who presumably were turned off by the blue language and violence.
The audience of adults 18-34 grew by 2 percent from the prior week, but adults 18-49 slid 13 percent and adults 25-54 fell by 12 percent.
While ABC may have suffered through the longest and lowest-rated Oscar telecast ever, E! Entertainment Television’s Academy Awards pre-show saw a spike in its viewership compared to last year, with viewership up 28 percent.
The red carpet sneak-peek landed in the eighth spot in household rankings, ninth place in adults 18-34, seventh in adults 18-49 and fourth in adults 25-54.
