E.T.'s the hot
web thing

No surprise either, on its return 20 years later

By Marty Beard

The wrinkly little alien who stole America’s heart and and then went on to launch a line of peanut butter candies is back in theaters after 20 years.
What's new, of course, for E.T.'s return is the internet, and with Friday the opening day for the re-release of "E.T.,", the official site ET20.com is seeing strong traffic.
Visits to the site in anticipation of Friday’s opening caused traffic to shoot up 73 percent during the week ended March 17, according to Nielsen//NetRatings.
In all, 255,000 unique visitors stopped by during the week.
Traffic has also been up for StarWars.com as fans logged on to see the trailer for "Episode II: Attack of the Clones," which opens May 16.
In all, traffic to the site increased 97 percent, to 315,000 unique visitors. Thirty-one percent of StarWars.com visitors logged on to the page featuring the trailer.
SonyPictures.com traffic increased 75 percent over the previous week, drawing 286,000 visitors in all. Nielsen//NetRatings notes that 17 percent of visitors went to the section dedicated to the movie "Resident Evil" and 15 percent logged on to watch "Spider-Man" trailers.
"Movie-trailer distribution has become an online commodity for the entertainment industry," says Nielsen//NetRatings analyst Jarvis Mak.
"Hollywood continues to play a growing role in contributing to the premium online content puzzle."
As further evidence that moviegoers were avid webgoers for the week, Yahoo’s movie section experienced a 43 percent jump in traffic when compared to the average of the previous three weeks, according to Jupiter Media Metrix. About 318,000 people a day visited Yahoo Movies during the week ended March 17.
Elsewhere on the web, the NCAA men’s basketball championships spurred waves of traffic to related web sites, demonstrating yet again, as if it needed further evidence, that major sporting events drive web traffic.
SportsLine.com traffic zoomed 155 percent when compared tio the average of the previous three weeks, to 1.1 million average unique daily visitors, according to Jupiter Media Metrix.
Along those lines, USAToday.com’s sports section traffic increased 44 percent, to 188,000 unique visitors a day, and traffic to Yahoo Sports rose 30 percent, to nearly 1.3 million people a day.
The same pattern held at fantasy sports site Sandbox.com, which saw its traffic jump 148 percent, to 152,000 unique visitors a day, as did TQStats.com, which increased 74 percent, to 93,000 people a day.
And Rivals.com, college and high school sports news site, experienced a 30 percent increase in traffic, to 120,000 unique visitors a day.
Jupiter Media Metrix also reports that a large number of Yahoo properties bumped up their traffic. Yahoo Music traffic increased 46 percent, to 213,000 visitors, and Yahoo people Search traffic increased 37 percent, to 239,000 unique visitors a day.
