Paula Jones and Tonya Harding on Fox's 'Celebrity Boxing'

NBC's 'Fear Factor'

CBS's 'Amazing Race 2'

Fox's big punch
with 'Celebrity Boxing'

Missed Tonya and Paula? Tune in tomorrow night.

By Mike Jasik

What began as a very promising season for Fox has turned out less so with mixed performances by its edgy new series "The Tick," "Undeclared," "24" and "Bernie Mac."
"Bernie Mac" is a clear hit, but the very oddball "Tick" was canceled, and "24," so highly touted by both the network and critics as innovative TV at its best, is not pulling in huge numbers of viewers. "Undeclared" is bumping along the bottom somewhere.
But Fox executives, in addition to being masters of edge, are also aces when it comes to schlock, and last week they proved it again with "Celebrity Boxing," a special in which some of America's most disgraced and controversial public figures were pitted against one another in the boxing ring.
Reviled by critics, Fox's "Celebrity Boxing" drew nearly 15.5 million viewers last Wednesday and was the fourth-highest-rated program of the week among adults 18-49 with a a 7.1 rating.
More men ages 18-34 tuned to see Paula Jones and Tonya Harding go at it than tuned in to watch any other show that night, including CBS's "Survivor: Marquesas."
The B-list brawl stands as the fourth-most-watched show for Fox this season, after the Super Bowl, World Series and the feature film "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace."
It also ranks as Fox's highest-rated special since its disastrous  "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire," whose airing in 2000 was met by loud hoots from critics and followed by a series of nasty revelations about some of the contestants.
In its aftermath, Fox executives said they were swearing off schlock specials once and for all.
Buoyed by the success of "Celebrity Boxing," Fox has announced it  will re-air the three-fight punch-out this tomorrow night at 8 p.m. in place of the low-rated "Family Guy."
It is also planning another "Boxing" special for May with a fresh cast of sluggers.
Still, for all the attention paid to "Boxing" and the viewers it drew in, NBC won the week in households and adults 18-49 with a schedule heavy on repeats, edging out CBS, which was without its top-rated "CSI" due to NCAA college basketball coverage.
   NBC finished with a 4.4 adult 18-49 rating for the week. CBS had a 3.9, Fox a 3.6 and ABC a 3.4. UPN posted a 1.6; the WB a 1.4.
Even transported to Wednesday night due to college ball on Thursday, viewers still flocked to CBS's "Survivor: Marquesas."
The fourth installment of the series averaged an 8.9 adult 18-49 rating for the hour, just a hair below its debut numbers, and drew over 20 million viewers, the most of any show for the week.
CBS's "March Madness" college basketball, on Thursday through Sunday, couldn't match those numbers, but it did log a 12 percent increase in household ratings over the year before in the same time frame.
CBS's other reality entry, "The Amazing Race 2," benefited greatly from its "Survivor" lead-in. Its 18-49 rating rose 33 percent from its debut on Monday, to a 5.8, ranking 11th in the demo for the week.
NBC's "Fear Factor" did even better. The expanded, 90-minute episode drew 17 million viewers, nearly 10 million of whom were adults 18-49. The gross-out reality series posted a 7.6 adult 18-49 rating, a 66 percent jump from the previous week.
This didn't help the premiere of the "Colin Quinn Show," which lost a crushing 60 percent of the lead-in provided by the last half-hour of "Fear Factor."
Though it wasn't news to most people, Rosie O'Donnell's step out of the closet on ABC's "Primetime Thursday" more than doubled its adult 18-49 rating from the week before. The special edition on gay adoption also finished as the network's highest-rated program for the week in households and second only to "The Practice" in adults 18-49.
NBC took the week in households with a 7.9 rating and 13 share, followed closely by a 7.5/13 from CBS. ABC came in third place with a 6.2/13, Fox had a 4.9/8, UPN a 2.3/4 and the WB a 2.1/3.
