NBC's faltering 'Weakest Link'

'Survivor' and '9/11'
give CBS a boost

Push it within pinching range of NBC for the week

By Kevin Downey

NBC is probably wishing about now that the reality show fad was as dead as it’s been reported to be.
But the genre is very much alive, and proof is in the performance of CBS's “Survivor: Marquesas.”
While NBC's “Friends” is enjoying huge audiences opposite "Survivor," the reality show is showing considerable strength after a so-so debut.
"Survivor" was one of four CBS shows that ranked in the top 10 last week among the adult 18-49 audience that NBC has dominated all season.
“Survivor’s” 9.4 rating in the demo, aided by CBS’s “9/11” special on Sunday, helped push CBS up to within one-tenth of a rating point of NBC for the week.
    CBS had a 4.8 adult 18-49 rating to NBC’s 4.9. Fox had a 3.6, ABC had a 2.8, UPN had a 1.5 and the WB had a 1.4.
“Survivor’s” rating in the demo was up 3 percent from its premiere and ranked No. 6.
Moreover, the reality show managed to narrow the gap that NBC’s combination of “Friends” and the new “Leap of Faith” had the week before.
NBC’s lead in the 8 p.m. hour on Thursday dropped to just under 13 percent from 28 percent. “Leap of Faith” lost 29 percent of its lead-in audience with an 8.8 rating that was down 11 percent from its premiere.
CBS is also benefiting from “CSI,” which was again the week’s most-watched regularly scheduled show.
But by far the week’s highest-rated program was CBS’s Sunday special, “9/11,” the documentary about the firefighters who were first on the scene at the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks.
The special had a 16.2 adult 18-49 rating, which was 31 percent higher than the No. 2 show for the week, pulling in an audience of 39 million people, which placed it among the season’s most-watched programs, such as the closing ceremonies of the winter Olympics.
CBS’s adult 18-49 rating last week was 23 percent better than it’s averaged this season.
The network still ranks No. 3 for the season, though, with a 3.9 rating. NBC is in the lead with a 5.4, Fox has a 4.3 and ABC has a 3.7. UPN has a 1.9 and the WB has a 1.6.
CBS ranked No. 1 in households last week with a 9.4 rating and 15 share. NBC had an 8.2/13, ABC had a 5.1/8, and Fox had a 4.7/8. UPN had a 2.2/4 and the WB, which had by far the highest-ranked show among the two smaller networks with “7th Heaven,” had a 2.1/3.
Although NBC’s ratings have hardly been slumping, its luck with unscripted shows has been faltering with the exception of “Fear Factor,” which is settling in as a midrange hit. It ranked No. 24 with a 4.7 rating among adults 18-49.
NBC’s “Weakest Link,” however, seems to be suffering the same fate as ABC’s “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”
The NBC game show tied for a low No. 65 last week with a 2.6 rating among adults 18-49 while ABC’s “Millionaire” tied for No. 85 with a 2.1 rating.
Meanwhile, most of the networks’ midseason shows are only doing modestly well.
NBC’s “Watching Ellie,” for example, ranked No. 19 with a 5.1 rating, which was down 28 percent from its premiere.
CBS’s Supreme Court drama, “First Monday” was the week’s lowest-rated regularly scheduled show among the Big Four networks. It had a 1.5 adult 18-49 rating and ranked No. 102 out of 123 primetime shows.
UPN’s “Random Years” and “As If” both had ratings lower than a 1.
