Fox
streak broken
by All-Star slump
Controversial game
was also the least watched
By Kevin Downey
If television ratings were as predictable as they
sometimes seem, Fox would be gloating over numbers for this year’s
All-Star Game and its second straight week of knocking NBC out of first
place in the coveted adult 18-49 demographic.
Instead, the network is settling for a tie with NBC as the
highest-rated network.
At fault is the least-watched All-Star game ever, which will
surely be remembered far longer for its abrupt end in an eleventh inning
tie than for its poor ratings.
Still, the ratings will linger at least a year for hitting a
new low.
The Major League Baseball game averaged a 9.5 household
rating, which was good enough to rank No. 1 for the week, but was down
13.6 percent from last year and was down 6 percent from the previous low
set in 2000, when the game averaged a 10.1 rating on NBC.
Fox doubled up the All-Star Game with a pre-show that pulled
in an audience of 12.4 million, which together with the game and other top
programs effectively pushed the network’s average audience up 22 percent
from a week earlier, to 7.2 million.
The All-Star game itself, however, had its worst audience
ever of just under 14.7 million.
While this year’s game is now the standard-bearer for how
far those ratings can fall, the game at least gave Fox a boost against NBC
and its dominating lineup of reality shows and highly-rated reruns.
Fox’s adult 18-49 rating, in fact, was up from a week
earlier when NASCAR and hit shows, like “American Idol: The Search for a
Superstar,” gave the network its first win of the summer.
Fox and NBC had a 2.9 rating. CBS had a 2.3, ABC had a 2.1,
UPN had a 1.1 and the WB had a 0.9.
NBC had two of the highest rated shows in the demo with “Dog
Eat Dog” and “Fear Factor,” which ranked No. 3 and No. 4,
respectively. The shows only fell behind the All-Star game and CBS’s “CSI.”
The number of reality shows among the highest-rated should
quell any discussions about the imminent demise of the genre.
Of the top 25 shows in the 18-49 demographic, eight were
reality shows while another four were unscripted newsmagazines and sports
programs.
Box office movies also held up well last week, relative
to low summer ratings and low expectations for a genre that’s been
fading from broadcast networks for years.
NBC and Fox did especially well among adults 18-49 with
movies that are directly or indirectly linked to current box office hits.
NBC’s “Men In Black” on Saturday was tied at No. 8 for the
week and was watched by an overall audience of nearly 9.4 million.
Fox’s “Jerry Maguire,” which stars "Minority
Report's" Tom Cruise, ranked No. 11 in the 18-49 demographic.
Even ABC had a fairly strong performance from “The Horse
Whisperer,” although the movie mostly attracted an older crowd.
The movie tied for No. 8 among households and was No. 6 in
total viewers with an audience of 10.9 million, but only managed to rank
No. 31 among adults 18-49.
CBS’s Sunday movie, “Holy Joe,” had an even more
severe contrast between young and old viewers.
The movie ranked a low No. 49 in the 18-49 demographic but
was No. 10 among households. That movie had an audience of 8.7 million.
CBS won the week in households with a 5.4 rating and 10 share to
NBC’s 5.2/10. Fox had a 4.7/9, ABC had a 4.1/8, UPN had a 1.7/3 and the
WB had a 1.5/3.
