Fox's NFC Championship Game: Eagles vs. Rams

Fox's 'That '80s Show'

For Fox, some
pre-Olympic glory

Original shows up it to No 1. in 18-49s--for a spell

By Kevin Downey

As the broadcast networks gear up for the beginning of the February sweeps, Fox appears especially strong and about to get stronger still.
Last week, a week typical of weeks prior to sweeps, most networks were in repeats, so Fox's original programming did especially well.
And of course Fox will own this coming weekend when it airs Super Bowl XXXVI.
But after Sunday whatever edge Fox has will likely fade, and quickly, with NBC dominating the sweeps on the strength of the Winter Olympics.
The network last week was bumped to No. 1 in the 18-49 demographic, and by a sizable margin, because of the NFC Championship game in which the St. Louis Rams advanced to the Super Bowl with a 29-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Fox's post-game coverage was the No. 3 show in the demo for the week.
Fox also had a strong debut for "That '80s Show," which ranked No. 13 in the demo, pushing Fox’s weekly rating up a full point over its season average, to a 5.0.
    NBC had a 4.7, ABC had a 3.6, CBS had a 3.5, UPN had a 1.9, and the WB had a 1.7.
Fox was also helped by its usual top-rated programs, with "The Simpsons," "Malcolm in the Middle," "That '70s Show," and "Bernie Mac" falling into the week’s top-20 as well.
The network’s only serious problems have now been canceled: "The Tick," its lowest-rated program; and "The Chamber," which was dumped after just two episodes, amid protests over treatment of contestants and evidence of mounting viewer disinterest. It ranked only No. 73 with a 2.6 rating.
Still, while Fox will move up in standing because of the Super Bowl, the network continues to struggle to hold its tie position with CBS for a distant second place in the 18-49 demographic.
    NBC has a 4.7 to CBS and Fox’s 4.0. ABC has a 3.9, UPN has a 2.0, and the WB has a 1.6.
NBC’s rating last week was fueled mostly by its Thursday lineup, which is benefiting from the absence of CBS’s "Survivor."
A repeat of "Friends," in fact, was the top-rated show with an 11.3 adult 18-49 rating.
And NBC had a strong performer in its news special, "Bush White House: Inside the Real West Wing," which ranked No. 29 in the demo and was watched by more than 15.2 million people.
CBS got its biggest rating from "CSI" on Thursday night. But the network’s new Supreme Court drama, "First Monday," had serious trouble in its tough Friday time slot. The show tied at No. 82 with a 2.2 rating, but did better in total viewers, with an audience of 10.5 million.
Meanwhile, ABC continues to struggle with the loss of Monday Night Football.
The network had the No. 2 show of the week with the first part of "Stephen King’s Rose Red."
Part 1 of this three-parter beat CBS’s "My Sister’s Keeper" in head-to-head competition, with a 9.6 rating, and was ranked No. 3 in total viewers, with an audience of 20 million.
CBS’s Hallmark movie only managed to tie for No. 57, in comparison, with a 3.3 adult 18-49 rating. It had just under 14.5 million viewers.
In a telling sign of how badly ABC is doing its second-highest-rated show was "My Wife & Kids" at No. 31.
CBS ranked No. 1 in households for the week.
    It had an 8.3 rating and 13 share to NBC’s 8.2/13, Fox’s 6.5/10, ABC’s 6.2/10, UPN’s 2.8/4, and the WB’s 2.5/4.
