Traffic flurries for
Winter Olympics site

Get tickets, buy your trinkets, meet the athletes

By Marty Beard

As anticipation grows over the Winter Olympics, so does traffic to the games’ official web site, SaltLake2002.com.
Each day during the week ending Jan. 13, 67,000 unique visitors logged onto the web site, which amounts to a 246 percent increase over the previous three-week period, according to Jupiter Media Metrix.
Traffic to the site inevitably will continue to increase, leading up to the Feb. 8 opening ceremonies. The site expects about 10 million unique visitors during the month of February.
SaltLake2002.com, which also can be accessed by logging onto Olympics.com or SLC2002.org, is operated by MSNBC.
It features event schedules, profiles of athletes, and news stories, along with assorted community features. The site’s e-commerce side sells tickets to the sporting events, in addition to commemorative tchotchkes, such as statuettes.
The only advertisers that currently may appear on the site are Olympic sponsors, partners and suppliers, but the site says it may consider opening the field up to advertisers that don’t compete with any of the above.
People find the site either intuitively, by logging onto Olympics.com, or by using search engines or seeing promotions for it on air.
Also drawing users' attention these days is the bankruptcy of energy-trading company Enron, the evidence of that interest is being expressed in traffic increases to business news sites.
Businessweek.com received 76,000 average daily unique visitors, which is 113 percent more traffic during the week ending Jan. 13 compared to the average of the preceding three weeks.
WSJ.com drew 105,000 average daily unique visitors, 101 percent more than the average of the previous three weeks. TheStreet.com, Marketfacts.com and Forbes.com also experienced steep increases in traffic.
Traffic was also up for government sites, with users most commonly seeking information on taxes or terrorism.
USTreas.gov, the web site of the U.S. Treasury, which also happens to oversee the FBI, attracted 90 percent more traffic than it had, compared to the previous three weeks' average, for a total of 312,000 visitors a day.
Many of those visitors were perhaps drawn there by the department’s release of the names of suspected terrorists. Also, the site is soliciting feedback on its pending redesign.
But for some government sites, the uptick in traffic has no obvious explanation.
For example, the Environmental Protection Agency’s site, EPA.gov, drew 283 percent more traffic, with 83,000 visitors a day, and NIH.gov, the site of the National Institutes of Health, attracted 73 percent more traffic, or 167,000 visitors a day.
