NBC by a mile, ABC

Eases on ahead with end of 'Survivor' and 'MNF'

By Kevin Downey

It was assumed NBC’s hold on America's TV audience would tighten once "Monday Night Football" ended on ABC and "Survivor" wrapped up on CBS.
It has indeed, and at the expense of those two rivals, especially ABC.
The network’s 5.9 adult 18-49 rating last week was more than one full point ahead of CBS’s 4.8, nearly two points ahead of Fox’s 4.0, and almost three rating points ahead of ABC’s 3.1.
NBC was helped a bit by the 23.5 million people who tuned into the "Golden Globes," making it the fifth-most-watched program.
But the main reason for NBC’s dominance is the struggles taking place over at ABC and CBS with the conclusion of football and the one-month hiatus for "Survivor" until "Marquesas" debuts.
The loss was most damaging to ABC, which has been struggling in last place among the Big Four networks for much of the season.
Its 18-49 rating is down 37 percent compared to the week before, and it’s about 21 percent lower than ABC’s average this season.
ABC’s problems have been widely discussed since "Millionaire" started to wane last year. Most of the network’s troubles stem from failing to produce new hits.
The lack of hits was embarrassingly obvious last week.
ABC only had one show among the top 25 in household ratings, with "NYPD Blue" at No. 25.
The loss of "Survivor: Africa" was felt at CBS, but the network at least had football playoff games to propel its 18-49 rating, which was actually one-tenth of a point ahead of the week before.
The AFC divisional playoff between Oakland and New England was the second-most-watched show last week, with just under 29 million viewers.
And CBS’s "CSI" continued to dominate the Thursday at 9 p.m. hour against NBC’s "Will & Grace" and "Just Shoot Me." The second-year drama, which is likely to spawn a spin-off next season, was watched by more than 24 million viewers, or about 45 percent more than NBC’s lineup.
CBS also did relatively well with a special preview of its new Supreme Court drama, "First Monday," which ranked No. 17 among all shows. Its regular Friday episode did not make the top-25.
But CBS’s loss of "Survivor," which was replaced with a special about the "Africa" cast, helped NBC.
The audience for "Friends," already the season’s most-watched series, went up nearly 15 percent compared to the previous week and was watched by more than 29 million viewers.
All of NBC’s Thursday shows were among the week’s most-watched, as were some of its Monday, Wednesday, and Friday dramas.
NBC is holding its lead in the adult 18-49 demographic for the season with a 4.7 rating to CBS and Fox’s 4.0, and ABC’s 3.9. UPN has a 2, and the WB has a 1.6.
CBS leads among household ratings with an 8.3 and 14 share.
    NBC has an 8.0/13, ABC has a 6.9/11, Fox has a 6.0/10, UPN has a 2.8/4, and the WB has a 2.5/4.
