'Wild Wild West' on TBS

NBA All-Star Saturday on TNT

Cable feels little
of Olympics' bite

Overall household primetime viewership is up 5%

By Mike Jasik

The 2002 winter Olympiad from Salt Lake City may be exceeding already optimistic ratings expectations, but NBC's gains appear to be coming largely at the expense of the other broadcast networks.
Cable appears to be suffering far less.
Cable's overall primetime household rating actually increased 4.8 percent for the week ending Feb. 10, which included the first three days of the Olympics coverage, according to the Cable Advertising Bureau.
That's identical to the jump experienced by the Big Four networks as a result of NBC's dramatic gains from the Olympics.
TNT and TBS in particular saw their audiences surge, by 24 and 14 percent respectively, largely due to big numbers for the 1999 Will Smith movie "Wild Wild West" on TBS and TNT's NBA All-Star coverage last weekend.
That uptick drove the AOL Time Warner properties to second and third place in primetime households for the week, behind Lifetime, and to first and second place in adults 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, respectively.
Seven of the top 10 cable networks nevertheless experienced declines in total primetime viewership from the prior week, with A&E, Fox News and Discovery sliding more than 15 percent.
Certainly some of those declines represented the loss of viewers to NBC's Olympic coverage. But they also reflect the generally volatile swings in cable ratings from week to week resulting from the performance of a big-drawing movie or special event, such as TBS's "Wild Wild West," which aired on Sunday.
The action western came in first in households and adults 25-54, fifth among adults 18-34, and third among adults 18-49. The encore presentation immediately following finished 16th in primetime households and ninth in adults 18-49.
TNT's NBA All-Star Saturday coverage, while it didn't see anywhere near the 61 percent improvement in ratings of NBC's NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, which aired just prior to the Olympics, still managed to exactly match last year's 3.4 household rating.
The three-hour plus special, which featured drills and general horsing around from the All-Stars, a three-point shootout, and a slam-dunk contest, came in sixth in primetime households for the week, fourth among adults 18-34 and 18-49, and fifth among adults 25-54.
The "Budweiser Shootout," a NASCAR event on TNT, finished fourth in households, third in adults 25-54 and fifth in adults 18-49.
A repeat of the 1993 Julia Roberts-Denzel Washington movie "The Pelican Brief" gave TNT an extra nudge, pushing it up to 10th in households and eighth in adults 25-54.
Even without a "State of the Union" address, which brought in strong ratings the prior week, Fox News increased its lead over CNN yet again. The margin swelled to 316,000 viewers in total viewership, versus 282,000 last week.
Three weeks ago the gap stood at only 85,000 viewers.
Though its household viewership has fallen slightly in the weeks since its premiere in mid-January, MTV's latest "Real World" kept all of its adult 18-34 and 18-49 audience and built up its adult 25-54 viewership, pushing the show into the top 10 for the first time this week.
