World Series
scores big for Fox

Boots NBC from lead in 18-49 viewers for the week

By Kevin Downey

A near-record number of Americans were sitting in front of their TV sets again on Sunday, and for a change they weren't drawn there by tragedy or national crisis.
It was rather a night of specials, the seventh game of the World Series on Fox and the Emmys on CBS.
Altogether, 68 percent of American households tuned in, just one percentage point below the number who tuned in on Sept. 11 in the wake of the terrorist attacks.
That’s an 8 percent increase over the average Sunday this season.
About 60 percent of homes were tuned into the broadcast networks, which is about 30 percent above the norm.
The Emmys were watched by 17.1 million viewers, while part one of the "Uprising" miniseries on NBC was watched by 13 million.
But the biggest draw for the night by far was game seven of the Series.
Almost 72 million people watched at least part of the Arizona Diamondbacks' ninth-inning 3-2 win over the New York Yankees. And more than 39 million watched the full game, on average.
The final game in the series was the most-watched since game seven in 1991.
The seven-game series, which was watched by an average of 24.5 million people, was up 35 percent over last year’s record-low Yankees/Mets matchup and was the biggest World Series audience since 1997.
Game seven was Fox's fourth-most-watched show ever, giving the network an easy win for the night, and Fox's overall performance for the week was enough to kick NBC out of the lead in the 18-49 viewer demographic while giving the network wins in all other demos as well.
    In the 18-49 demo, Fox had a 7.4 rating. NBC had a 4.9, CBS had a 4.4, ABC had a 3.7, UPN had a 2.0, and the WB had a 1.7.
Fox had a 13.4 household rating and 21 share. CBS had an 8.6/14, NBC had an 8.3/13, and ABC had a 6.3/10. UPN had a 3.1/5 and the WB had a 2.7/4.
Fox’s World Series boost was unexpected. The Series has never aired during the November sweeps, which is when network affiliates use ratings to set local ad rates.
Fox is No. 1, as a result, in every demo for the first five nights of the month-long sweeps.
Its average audience is up 91 percent compared to the same time last year. Its 18-49 rating is up 40 percent, and its household rating is up 87 percent.
CBS is the only other Big Four network that is up during this sweeps, partly due to the Emmy Awards show, which was originally scheduled to air on Sept. 16.
The Emmys was the least-watched since 1990 and was down about 21 percent from last year’s telecast. But the special nearly matched the audience it had in 1999.
CBS's "Survivor: Africa" is still in the top 10 but has struggled this season against NBC’s revived "Friends." Last week the sitcom widened its lead over "Survivor," to a 73 percent advantage in the 18-49 demo, with a 13.5 compared to a 7.8 rating.
Meanwhile a number of network shows were pulled from the schedule in typical sweeps maneuvers to pump up ratings.
A repeat of "Friends," for example, filled in for "Inside Schwartz" and beat the rookie series’ rating from the previous week by 38 percent.
NBC’s "Emeril" and CBS’s "Wolf Lake" have been sidelined. ABC canceled the Jason Alexander vehicle, "Bob Patterson," and CBS canned "Citizen Baines."
At the same time, ABC premiered its Friday night newsmagazine, "America ’01," which failed to pull in viewers. The show tied for No. 89 with a 1.8, adult 18-49, rating and had the third-lowest rating of any of the Big Four primetime shows.
Two specials related to the Sept. 11 tragedies also fared poorly.
ABC’s "United We Stand" ranked No. 61 with a 2.7 rating and CBS’s "Concert for New York City" tied for No. 69 with a 2.5.
