Ad slump really
whammies biz titles

But February was kind to Seven Sister magazines

By Jennifer Cox

The nation's top business magazines took a big hit in February, with a marked decrease in both advertising revenue and ad pages.
As a category business titles were down 14.3 percent in advertising revenue and 34.5 percent in ad pages last month compared to the same period in 2000, according to the most recent figures from the Publishers Information Bureau.
The Industry Standard was hardest hit.
The title saw ad pages drop 64.2 percent, from 606.20 in February 2000 to 217.19 in February 2001. Ad revenues fell from $10.17 million last February to $6.44 million last month, representing a 36.7 percent decline.
Business Week’s ad revenue dropped 36.8 percent, from $41.59 million in February 2000 to $26.28 million in February 2001, while the magazine’s ad pages decreased 42.9 percent, from 433.30 last February to 247.20 last month.
Less severe declines were seen by arch-rivals Forbes and Fortune.
Forbes’s ad revenue dropped 1.2 percent, while the magazine’s ad pages fell 15.1 percent. Fortune’s ad revenue declined 5.9 percent, while its ad pages dropped 12.2 percent.

Newsweeklies also dropped considerably last month compared to PIB’s 2000 figures for the same period.
Ad revenue for the titles declined 16.3 percent, from $96.87 million to $81.08 million. Ad pages dropped 19.7 percent, from 793.57 to 637.54.
Time was hit the hardest, with a 20.4 percent decrease in ad revenue and a 27.8 percent drop in ad pages.
Newsweek’s ad revenue fell 17.7 percent, while its ad pages dropped 20.2 percent.
U.S. News & World Report, the longstanding No. 3 title in the field, saw a 15.3 percent decline in ad pages and a 4.2 percent drop in ad revenues.
In contrast, the women’s service category, which has been struggling in recent times, enjoyed a healthy increase last month compared to February 2000.
Ad revenue was up 13.2 percent, from $131.05 to $150.98 million for the so-called Seven Sister magazines. Ad pages increased from 792.87 to 826.65, marking an increase of 4.1 percent.
Woman’s Day’s ad revenue increased 41.7 percent, while the magazine’s ad pages rose 21.4 percent.
Family Circle’s revenue was up 37.4 percent in February, while its ad pages increased by 25.7 percent.
