'Rush Hour' leads in a week dominated by movies

By Elizabeth White

After ranking as the highest-rated program for the entire second quarter two weeks ago, the 1998 movie "Rush Hour" continued to dominate the cable ratings last week, the first week of the third quarter.
With repeated airings on TBS, the Jackie Chan movie ranked as the fourth, sixth and 13th-highest-rated program for the week in households; the third, fourth, and fifth highest-rated program among adults 18-49; and the third, fifth and sixth highest-rated program among adults 25-54.
Over the course of the week, "Rush Hour" was viewed by an average of 2.3 million households, 2.1 million adults 18-49, and two million adults 25-54 per screening.
The July Fourth primetime showing of "Rush Hour" also out-delivered the demographics of all of the programs on all four major broadcast networks during the same time period, by drawing over 2.5 million adults 18-49 and 2.5 million adults 25-54.
"Rush Hour’s" performance put TBS on top of the demographic rankings for the week, in both primetime and total-day measurements. Among adults 18-49, TBS won the primetime race by nearly 400,000 viewers, or by 36 percent over second-place USA.
TBS also had luck with another Jackie Chan movie on Saturday night, "First Strike." The late night showing that followed an airing of "Rush Hour" was the tenth-highest-rated program for the week among adults 18-49, the ninth-highest among adults 25-54, and 37th in households. One-and-a-half million adults 18-49, 1.6 million adults 25-54, and 1.8 million households tuned in to watch the program.
Overall, movies, both original and theatrical, were the most successful format on cable during the holiday week. Movies occupied nine of the top-20 rankings in households, seven of the top-10 among adults 18-49, and eight of the top-10 among adults 25-54.
Lifetime’s Sunday afternoon movies "Legacy of Sin" and "Frozen with Fear" both placed in the top-10 among households, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, and TBS’s Sunday night showing of "Trading Places" ranked in the top-10 for both adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.
American Movie Classics saw its average household delivery rise last week by nearly 40 percent in primetime and 32 percent in total day versus the week before, thanks to its "Godfather" marathon on July Fourth.
Showings of the Academy Award winning films "The Godfather" and "The Godfather: Part II" put AMC in eighth place for the week in primetime households and in sixth place during primetime among adults 25-54.
In other holiday programming, the Cartoon Network’s "Ed, Edd n Eddy" marathon, titled "Ed-Dependence Day," had four of its half-hours land among the top-61 household programs for the week. The highest-rated half-hour, in 13th place, was at 10 a.m. with 1.7 million homes, while the entire nine-hour marathon averaged 1.2 million homes.
Among cable’s original series, MTV’s "Real World X" was the seventh-highest-rated program among adults 18-49 and the 13th-highest-rated program in households for the week. The premiere of the new season attracted 1.6 million adults 18-49 and 1.8 million homes. TNT’s "Witchblade" was the 37th-highest-rated program for the week, with 1.8 million homes.
