TNT's 'Crossfire Trail'
kicks WWF out of ring

Hot L’Amour oater breaks cable movie record

By Elizabeth White

TNT’s original movie, "Crossfire Trail," notched the highest numbers ever for a movie shown on basic cable and toppled the WWF from its No. 1 perch in the process.
The Louis L’Amour western starring Tom Selleck reached over 12.5 million viewers in its first airing and grabbed another 4 million more in the encore presentation that immediately followed it.
As a point of comparison, that’s more total viewers than tuned in to last week’s episode of "ER" on NBC.
In addition, the initial "Crossfire Trail" airing drew nearly twice as many viewers as the second-highest rated show last week, "WWF Entertainment."
"Crossfire Trail" earned a 9.6/13 household rating and share and placed first among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.
The other big original cable movies last week were Lifetime’s "Small Sacrifices, Part II," "Lies of the Heart," and "Gone in a Heartbeat." The movies averaged a 4.0/8 household rating and share, and reached an average of nearly 4 million viewers.
Lifetime’s much-touted original series "The Division" didn’t fare so well last week. The legal drama had only 6 percent fewer viewers than the previous week, but that was enough to drop it from tenth place to 44th place this week.
A&E’s new legal drama "100 Centre Street" did a little better than "The Division." The debut of the A&E program also finished in 44th place, but with a slightly higher household share.
And Nickelodeon continued to dominate the household ratings with its original cartoons. "Rugrats" and "Spongebob" accounted for 21 of last week’s top 50 household programs. Four "Rugrats" were in the top 10, averaging 4.8 million viewers and a 3.9/7 household rating and share.
Among adults 18-49, no original programs landed in the top 10 of programs. The 10 highest-rated programs were original cable movies, feature films, and wrestling.
The WWF on TNN took the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while TNT’s "WCW Monday Nitro Live!" finished sixth.
On TBS, the Sunday features "Star Wars" and "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" placed fourth and fifth among adults 18-49, respectively.
And two more TBS movies, "Total Recall" and "Trading Places," and two Lifetime original movies, "Small Sacrifices, Part II" and "Lies of the Heart," rounded out the rest of the top 10 among adults 18-49.
TNT and TBS were the top two networks last week among adults 18-49 during primetime, while TBS and Lifetime were the top two networks among adults 18-49 in total day rankings.
Cable news networks got one last gasp out of the presidential election last week with coverage of the inauguration, and Fox News Channel had the highest rated coverage, with 2.5 million viewers and a 3.0/6 household rating and share.
More people watched CNN’s inauguration coverage, however. CNN had just over 3 million viewers, but a 2.8/6 household rating and share.
