NBC's Xmas gift
to ABC and CBS

Cedes 18-49 viewers with holiday week of reruns

By Kevin Downey

Christmas is a special time of year, and it was especially so this holiday season on television.
NBC, the longstanding taker in 18-49 viewers, became a giver of sorts by choosing to fluff its schedule with reruns.
ABC and CBS, which featured specials and original programming, were the beneficiaries of NBC's largess, rising to No. 1 and No. 2 in the adult 18-49 demographic so much sought after by advertisers.
Those leads will likely be short-lived, however.
NBC has been obliterating its competition this season in the adult 18-49 demographic and currently holds a seven-tenths of a rating point lead for the first 13 weeks of the season.
By bowing out of original programming during the holidays, NBC saw its adult 18-49 rating drop about 33 percent from earlier this month, to a 3.3 for the week ending Dec. 23.
ABC had a 3.9 and was the only network to post a week-to-week improvement.
Its rating was up 15 percent thanks in large part to NFL football, specials like "Classic TV Bloopers," and some its highest-rated shows, such as "NYPD Blue" and "Drew Carey," which either maintained or improved on ratings from a week earlier.
CBS had a 3.5 rating and was down 8 percent, while Fox had a 3.1 and was down 16 percent from the previous week. UPN had a 1.6 to the WB’s 1.4.
Unlike NBC, which has been heavy on repeats in recent weeks, CBS managed to do extremely well in household ratings with original episodes of most of its top-rated shows. The network already has a three-tenths of a rating point lead for the season and beat ABC, its closest competitor, by more than one full rating point two weeks ago.
    CBS had an 8.0 household rating and 14 share to ABC’s 6.8/12, NBC’s 5.9/10, Fox’s 4.1/7, UPN’s 2.4/4, and the WB’s 2.3/4.
CBS had 14 shows in the top-25 last week with "CSI" taking the No. 1 spot.
"Everybody Loves Raymond" ranked No. 2 and had an audience of more than 22 million, an increase of nearly three million viewers from a week earlier in the light TV-viewing days leading up to the holidays.
CBS’s entire Monday lineup of "King of Queens," "Raymond," "Yes, Dear," and "Family Law," in fact, ranked among the top-20 shows in household ratings.
And even the network’s struggling rookie series, "Ellen," got a boost from a special Monday night slot. The show ranked No. 13 and had 13.6 million viewers, or about twice the audience it gets in its regular Friday time period.
Perhaps the sourest note for CBS was its once-heralded "Education of Max Bickford." The drama has been struggling for months as one of CBS’s least-watched shows and last week ranked as the lowest-rated on the Big Four networks in the 18-49 demo.
