Football coverage tops the week in cable viewing

As the NFL entered its final month of regular season play last week, the football league picked up in popularity on cable TV.
    ESPN’s Sunday night game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens was the highest-rated program for the week in households, adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34.
    The close game earned a 9.1 household rating, representing 7.8 million homes. That household rating was also 82 percent higher than the second-highest-rated show for the week, TNN’s "WWF" on Monday night.
    ESPN’s pre-game show, "NFL Primetime," was the fourth-highest-rated program for the week in households, with a 4.2 rating.
    "NFL Primetime" also ranked third among adults 18-49, with nearly three million viewers in the demographic; second among adults 25-54, with 3.1 million viewers in the demographic; and fourth among adults 18-34, with 1.5 million viewers in the demographic.
    ESPN’s post-game show, "NFL Sportscenter," was the fifth-highest-rated program in households for the week, with a 4.0 household rating. The football wrap-up show also placed fourth among adults 18-49, fourth among adults 25-54 and fifth among adults 18-34.
    ESPN finished the week ranked first in primetime for all four audience categories, although TNT tied the sports network for first place in households.
    TNT’s primetime numbers were driven primarily by its original movie on Monday night, "Pretender: Island of the Haunted."
    The movie, a follow-up to the canceled NBC series, was the highest-rated movie for the week in households, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, and the third highest rated among adults 18-34. It earned a 3.1 household rating, good enough for seventh place in households for the week.
    TNT’s Saturday night movie, yet another showing of the feature film "Rush Hour," was also a top-10 program among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 last week. The movie ranked 12th in households and was the highest-rated movie among adults 18-34, although it attracted fewer than one million viewers in the demographic.
    In the demographics, TNT was the second-highest-rated network for the week among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, and the third highest among adults 18-34.
    The other dominant programs last week were cartoons on Nickelodeon, particularly "SpongeBob SquarePants." The cartoon occupied 11 of the top-21, and 18 of the top-59 spots in households last week.
    "Rugrats" occupied another 12 spots, "Hey Arnold" another 5, and an episode each of "Fairly Odd Parents" and "As Told by Ginger" ranked among the top-59 household programs.
    Nickelodeon was the top-rated network in total day households last week by nearly 300,000 homes.
    TBS was the top-rated network in total day for all three demographic categories, thanks largely to its Sunday afternoon movie block, which featured "Sniper" and "Total Recall" last week, and repeats of the NBC sitcom "Friends."
