And we thought
sweeps were over...

Specials galore keep network ratings healthy

By Kevin Downey

You’d think the month-long November sweeps hadn’t ended last Wednesday, judging by the competitive lineups that the broadcast networks are continuing to roll out.
The networks are still debuting big specials that are the type usually reserved for the sweeps, when local affiliates use pumped-up ratings to set ad prices.
Four of the six networks had ratings last week that were either flat or up from the week before, in fact. Only NBC and Fox were down, and only slightly.
    Sunday was especially competitive.
The "Brian’s Song" remake on "The Wonderful World of Disney" ranked No. 19 in the adult 18-49 demo with a 5.9 rating. It trounced NBC’s "The Prince of Egypt" with more than twice that movie’s rating and was up 11 percent compared to "The Santa Clause," which filled the "Disney" slot a week earlier.
At 9 p.m. on Sunday, CBS’s "Jim Henson’s Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story" tied at No. 33 with a 4.6 rating and was watched by more than 13.4 million people.
That movie competed with ABC’s "Alias," which had a ratings increase from the week before, and NBC’s "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," which was in repeat and took a 41 percent nosedive, to rank No. 75.
NBC still managed to rank No. 1 in the 18-49 demo for the week, though, based mostly on its regular lineup.
    The network averaged a 4.6 rating to ABC’s 4.3, CBS’s 4.2, and Fox’s 4.1. UPN had a 2.1 while the WB had a 1.7.
While the networks are returning now to a mix of original and repeat programs, high-profile November sweeps stunts through last Wednesday dominated most of the ratings for the week.
Carol Burnett’s "Show Stoppers" was the biggest among them. The special ranked No. 2 in the 18-49 demo with a 9.5 rating and was the most-watched show of the week with 29.8 million viewers.
NBC did well with a celebrity edition of its summer series, "Fear Factor," which NBC will bring back to its schedule in January.
That show ranked No. 6 with a 7.5 rating and was watched by more than 17.2 million people.
The networks are also rolling out a number of holiday specials, though with decidedly mixed results.
NBC’s "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" tied with CBS’s "Frosty Returns" at No. 41 with a 4.1 rating. CBS’s "Frosty the Snowman" did marginally better at No. 39 with a 4.2 rating.
Meanwhile, two holiday specials from Nickelodeon that aired on its sister network, CBS, proved that synergy between a mega-media company’s holdings doesn't always happen.
The two "Rugrats" specials–one for Christmas and one for Chanukah–were the lowest-rated shows on the Big Four networks.
Although those specials fizzled, CBS is managing to do something now that it had all but given up on a couple of years ago: It’s attracting a younger audience.
Its rating among adults 18-34 was up 30 percent in the November sweeps compared to last year and it ranked No. 3 among all the networks.
CBS’s adult 18-49 rating was up 18 percent and it ranked No. 3 with a 4.5 rating. NBC took the sweeps for a second year in a row with a 5.1 to Fox’s 5.0. ABC had a 3.9 rating and was down 23 percent.
   UPN had a 2.0 to the WB’s 1.8 rating.
CBS is now tied with NBC as the No. 1 network for the season, thanks in large part to the boost it got from Carol Burnett and top shows like "Everybody Loves Raymond."
CBS and NBC have an 8.5 household rating and 14 share to ABC’s 7.0/11 and Fox’s 6.8/11. UPN has a 3.1/5 to the WB’s 2.7/4.
    CBS had an 8.6/14 last week and far outpaced NBC’s 7.9/13, ABC’s 7.5/12, Fox’s 5.9/9, UPN’s 3.0/5, and the WB’s 2.6/4.
