'Early show' skids while 'GMA' soars
CBS's "Early," launched in the fall with such high hopes, has finished the fourth quarter a distant third in a three-show race for the attention of America's morning TV viewers. The latest Nielsen numbers show that the Bryant Gumbel-hosted show was actually down 7 percent from the previous year, with just 2.7 million viewers tuning in to CBS. Leader "Today" stayed about where it was, at 6 million, but ABC's "Good Morning America" picked up a raft of new watchers, rising to 4.3 million, an increase of 30 percent. Credit goes to hosts Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson, who were brought in to combat declining numbers.

Ted and Jane in trial separation
Ted Turner and wife Jane Fonda have announced a temporary separation, according to published reports. The couple cited the need to take "personal time" as a reason for the decision, but affirmed their ultimate intention to work things out and get back together. Founder of Turner Broadcasting Systems and vice chairman of Time Warner Inc., Turner married actress-turned fitness guru Fonda in 1991.
