Merged NBC web properties
debut at No. 8 on top 10 list

NBCi soars on strength of Snap and Xoom

There’s a new name among the web’s top 10 properties.
     Actually, it’s an old name with a new letter—NBCi. For the week ending Jan. 2, 2000, Nielsen//NetRatings has begun grouping NBC’s internet properties under the NBCi corporate name.
    Largely on the strength of its Snap.com and Xoom.com properties, NBCi "debuts" on the Nielsen list of top web properties at No. 8.
    But NBCi didn’t end up displacing any other properties because this same week marks the first time that Blue Mountain Arts, the popular online greeting card site, has been folded into the Excite@Home numbers. This pushed Excite@Home up to an all-time high No. 4 on the chart, and removed Blue Mountain from the properties list entirely.
    Over on the list of separate domains, Bluemountain.com was the fifth most popular web site for the week. This position may be expected to fall off in coming weeks for lack of card-sending occasions in the near future. Valentine’s Day should be the next big boost for Blue Mountain and therefore for Excite@Home. Excite.com, the company’s signature portal, has taken in recent weeks to languishing just below the Top 10 on the domains list.
    Among web advertisers, Next Card made a push back into the top 10 for the week ending Jan. 2, thanks in part to its delivering the No. 2 banner of the week, which featured the tag line "How low can you go?"
    But the biggest splash on the banner chart for the week was made by health site Drkoop.com, with three different banners in the top 10—one featuring a contest giving away fitness equipment and two asking health-related questions that users were invited to click on the banner to find answers to.
   Among domains most popular with advertisers, MSN’s gaming site, Zone.com, remains high on the chart, at No. 3. But a Nielsen//NetRatings spokesperson has cleared up the mystery as to why Zone.com—with its audience of young male gamers—has become quite so popular: because this list includes house advertising. "Microsoft runs a ton of advertising on its own sites," he says.
