onto web's top 25 properties list

Brisk traffic in electronic St. Patrick's Day cards

   With the NCAA college basketball tournament in full swing, Americans are turning to the internet for up-to-the-minute information for filling in those omnipresent brackets.
   And where they’re turning first and foremost appears to be Sportsline.com, officially known as CBS SportsLine, the CBS-affiliated sports web site.
   For the week ending March 19, Sportsline.com showed up on the list of the web’s top 25 properties for the first time, finishing at No. 17, according to new numbers from Nielsen//NetRatings.
   The number of people visiting Sportsline.com increased some 68.2 percent over the previous week, from 866,000 to 1,464,000 unique visitors. Web sites for ESPN and Sports Illustrated also experienced sizable growth over the previous week—42.1 percent and 36.4 percent—but neither ended up in the top 25.
   Clearly the fact that the tournament is being televised on CBS, where CBS SportsLine is heavily promoted, is the differentiating factor driving web traffic.
   Another event driving web traffic for the week turned out to be St. Patrick’s Day, which has taken on a cyber-life of its own this year.
   Interest in sending online St. Patrick’s Day cards drove traffic up notably at the web’s two leading electronic card sites, Bluemountain.com and Americangreetings.com.
   Traffic to Bluemountain.com was up 44 percent over the previous week pushing it to the No. 9 spot on the list of top web domains from No. 13 the previous week. American Greetings was No. 18 for the week after not placing in the top 25 at all the week before.
   Bluemountain.com traffic was enough to drive its parent Excite@Home up to No. 4 on the list of top properties, ahead of the Lycos Network, which normally holds the No. 4 spot.
   Curiously, the sharp surge in Bluemountain.com traffic did not flow in any way over to Excite.com, the company’s main site. Traffic at Excite.com in fact was down 4 percent over the previous week.
