NBC wins second week of the season
Averages a 2.8 in 18-49s with the week's No. 1 show
October 10, 2012
It’s only two weeks into the fall, but there’s no doubt what the story of this season is going to be: NBC’s long-awaited turnaround.
For the second straight week, NBC finished first among adults 18-49 and was the only network to improve over the same week a year ago.
It marks the first time since the 2003 season that NBC has won the first two weeks in the demo outright (it tied with ABC for the top rating the first two weeks of 2007, though ABC had a slight edge in viewers).
NBC averaged a 2.8 rating and 8 share last week, the week ended Oct. 7, according to Nielsen, up 17 percent from the same week a year ago.
CBS, which won the second week of the season last year, finished second with a 2.4/7, off 25 percent from last year.
Fox was third with a 2.1/6, also down 25 percent, and ABC was fourth with a 2.0/6, a 17 percent decline.
Last week was an atypical week, because the presidential debate preempted regularly scheduled programming on Wednesday from 9 to 11 p.m.
That hurt some networks more than others.
ABC’s top show, “Modern Family,” was knocked off the schedule entirely, and Fox aired only one hour of “The X Factor,” its No. 1 show, instead of two.
It benefited NBC, on the other hand, because Wednesday is one of its weaker nights.
But the network still would have had a strong week. It had the No. 1 show overall, “Sunday Night Football,” and the top reality show, “The Voice,” which finished No. 3 overall.
It also had the top new show, “Revolution,” which was also the top drama, and the top new comedy, “Go On,” which tied with CBS’s “Partners” for that honor.
Of course come midseason NBC will lose its huge advantage from “Sunday Night Football.” But it’s certainly building a much stronger schedule than it’s had in years.
