NBC wins first sweeps in nine years
Takes November crown with the top show
November 21, 2012
NBC will win the November sweeps, and it will do so in dominating fashion.
The network, which finished fourth in the 2011 November sweeps, has improved by 17 percent over last year thanks to “Sunday Night Football” and a retooled lineup. It was the only network to see gains.
NBC averaged a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating and 8 share from Oct. 25 to Nov. 18, according to Nielsen. Final ratings aren’t expected to change much when the final two nights are added in; sweeps ends Wednesday night.
This was NBC's first November sweeps win in nine years.
It finished 17 percent ahead of second-place CBS, which has averaged 2.4/6. That’s down 14 percent from last year.
Fox was third at 2.3/6, down 26 percent from last year, and ABC fourth with a 2.2/6, off 12 percent from 2011. Univision placed fifth with a 1.5/4 and the CW was sixth with a 0.7/.2
NBC had the No. 1 show of sweeps, “Sunday Night Football.”
It got a boost as well from “The Voice,” which averaged a 4.5 during sweeps and was the No. 1 reality show. It also had the top new drama, “Revolution” with a 2.8, and the top new comedy, “Go On,” with a 2.2.
The network has been first or tied for first in seven of eight weeks this season and ranks first this season in 18-49s.
The big question moving forward is whether NBC can maintain that lead at midseason, when its schedule gets another makeover.
Its top three shows will be going off the air. “Sunday Night Football” ends in January, and “The Voice” and “Revolution” will go on hiatus until March.
Though NBC has dominated Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights this season, it has struggled on the other weeknights, and the return of “American Idol” on Fox will give that network a big boost at midseason.
Still, it’s been a remarkable fall for NBC after so many years of struggle.
Meanwhile, CBS will finish first among total viewers in November with 10.281 million. ABC will be second with 7.927 million, just a smidge ahead of NBC with 7.917 million. Fox is fourth with 6.522 million.
NBC is again the only network to see gains, up 15 percent.
Sports programming gave NBC, CBS and Fox, which all carry the NFL, a nice boost during sweeps. ABC notes that if sports is excluded from the November averages, it would have actually tied with CBS for first with a 2.2/6. NBC would be third with a 2.1/6 and Fox fourth with a 1.8/5.
