NBC glides to an easy summer victory
Averages a 2.8 in 18-49s, driven by the Olympics
September 12, 2012
Without the Olympics, it would have been close.
But with bigger-than-expected viewership for last month’s Games, NBC will cruise to its second straight summer victory over Fox.
NBC is averaging a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating this summer, measured from May 24 to Sept. 9, up 65 percent over last summer’s 1.7.
Take out the Olympics, and the network’s rating would fall by more than a point.
Not surprisingly, that 2.8 is well ahead of the other broadcast networks.
Fox, which finished just behind NBC last summer, is averaging a 1.6, down 6 percent from last summer.
ABC is in third place with a 1.4, off 18 percent from last summer. Univision is fourth at 1.3, and CBS is in fourth at 1.2, falling 14 percent.
NBC is the only Big Four network to show gains over last year, and only because of the Olympics.
Ratings for nearly every returning broadcast series have declined this summer, reflecting age as much as anything. Most shows have been on the air at least five seasons, if not more, and shows naturally lose viewers as they get older.
The one exception is Fox’s “MasterChef,” a relatively newbie in its third season, whose ratings are up 7 percent this year.
With those aging shows taking up a lot of space on the networks’ schedules, the declines are not surprising.
NBC’s lead is due solely to the Olympics. Without them it would still be competing for first with Fox, but the race would be much tighter.
It still has summer’s No. 1 show in 18-49s and total viewers, “America’s Got Talent,” and it’s certainly gotten an end-of-summer bump from the NFL.
NBC aired two primetime games last week, and they were by far the highest-rated shows on broadcast.
In fact, Sunday’s game between the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers drew the best 18-49 rating for any primetime NFL game on broadcast in 15 years, averaging an 11.0.
***
In broadcast ratings for the week ended Sept. 9:
Among adults 18-49, NBC was first for the week with a 3.7 average rating and an 11 share, followed by Fox at 2.3/7, Univision at 1.4/4, CBS at 1.2/3, ABC at 1.0/3, Telemundo at 0.5/1, ION, TeleFutura and CW at 0.3/1, Estrella at 0.1/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.
Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" 11.0; 2. NBC's "NFL Wednesday Special" 9.7; 3. NBC's "Football Night in America" 5.3; 4. NBC's "NFL Opening Kick-Off Show" 3.9; 5. Fox's "MasterChef" 2.7.
Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. NBC's "Sunday Night Football" 27.57 million; 2. NBC's "NFL Wednesday Special" 23.89 million; 3 NBC's "Football Night in America" 12.99 million; 4. CBS's "60 Minutes" 12.32 million; 5. NBC's "NFL Opening Kick-Off Show" 10.68 million.
Show on the rise: NBC's "Sunday Night Football," Sunday, 8:31 p.m. The game between the Broncos and Steelers averaged 27.57 million viewers, making it the second-most-watched regular season primetime game ever on NBC.
Show on the decline: Fox's "Hotel Hell," Monday, 8 p.m. The reality show slipped a bit due to the Labor Day holiday, falling 25 percent week-to-week among 18-49s from a 2.4 rating to a 1.8.
