ESPN has tapped former NFL player and ex-“Bachelor” Jesse Palmer as a college football analyst. Palmer will work on pregame, halftime and postgame studio coverage and on ESPN's daily show "College Football Live."
Lifetime has signed Janine Turner and Costas Mandylor to star in an upcoming TV movie tentatively titled "Primal Doubt." Turner, of "Strong Medicine" and "Northern Exposure," will play the lonely wife of Mandylor's character, a busy executive, who gets caught up in a murder investigation. Mandylor's recent credits include the "Saw" film series as well as guest appearances on "Sex and the City" and "Charmed."
Though season four of the BBC sci-fi drama "Doctor Who" will still air in spring of 2008, the fifth season will be delayed until 2010 while its star, David Tennant, takes time off to do stage work. Tennant will join the Royal Shakespeare Company. Three "Doctor Who" specials will air during 2009, in addition to one Christmas special in 2008. "Who" airs on Sci Fi in the U.S.
Sports Illustrated has hired Jim Trotter as a senior writer, covering pro football. Trotter was previously with the San Diego Union-Tribune, covering the national NFL beat.
A U.K. style icon is making her U.S. acting debut on "Ugly Betty." "Posh Spice" Victoria Beckham will appear as herself playing a celebrity bridesmaid on the ABC show in an episode this fall. Beckham had a reality special on NBC earlier this summer, about her move to the States for husband David's new soccer gig.
Fox has added two to the cast of "24": Jeffrey Nordling as an FBI agent, and John Billingsley as a recurring character. Nordling most recently appeared in FX’s "Dirt," while Billingsley has appeared in ABC’s "The Nine" and Fox’s "Prison Break," and held a long-recurring role on the "Star Trek" series "Enterprise."
CBS’s new comedy series "The Big Bang Theory" will reunite Sara Gilbert with star Johnny Galecki, who played Gilbert’s husband on "Roseanne." Galecki stars as one of a pair of socially inept physicists, and Gilbert will appear in a number of episodes as his love interest.
WMAQ, Chicago’s NBC affiliate, has tapped former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who will return as a sports contributor for a weekly segment called "The Iron Mic." The show will preview the coming week's Bears game as well as other games around the league.
Jerry Lewis has topped his own telethon record with nearly $64 million brought in during his 42nd annual Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year's telethon raised $61 million. Lewis plans to go on anchoring the benefit "as long as I'm breathing in and out."
Kate Walsh, of "Grey's Anatomy" and the upcoming spinoff "Private Practice," has gotten hitched to movie executive Alex Young. The two have been spotted together since spring, and have been publicly engaged for four months.
The San Jose Mercury News has upped Michael Turpin and Mike Jung to vice president of advertising and vice president of national sales and marketing, respectively. Turpin has been with the Mercury News since 2000, when he joined as major accounts manager, while Jung joined in 2001 as retail advertising director.
Anthony Day, a former editorial page editor for the Los Angeles Times, died Sunday at age 74 of complications from emphysema. Day headed up the editorial page from 1971 to 1989 after having worked for The Evening Bulletin of Philadelphia.
Katz Media Group has hired Dave Bisceglia as vice president and general manager for the American and National Divisions of Millennium Sales & Marketing's Chicago office. Bisceglia joins from Blair Television, where he had been senior vice president and director of sales.
Brian Bonsall, best known for playing Andy Keaton on "Family Ties," has pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and been sentenced to two years' probation. Bonsall was arrested after his girlfriend told police he poured a drink on her face while she was asleep and put her in a choke hold. Bonsall himself said he pushed her down in self-defense after she cut him with a knife, but charges weren't brought against her in the case.
