While the Telemundo station in Los Angeles has been defending its TV anchor and on-camera reporter who is involved in a relationship with the city's embattled mayor, critics say the station needs to defend its own actions. Telemundo spokespeople have called Mirthala Salinas a “great reporter” and “professional” after Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa admitted his relationship with her following months of speculation about the breakup of his marriage. A spokesman for the Spanish-language affiliate, whose network is owned by NBC Universal, says that Salinas moved off the political beat, including coverage of the mayor, nearly a year ago. Her current job is backup anchor and general correspondent. Critics say, however, that it was inappropriate for Salinas, who was working as the news anchor on June 8, to read the story of the mayor's announcement that he and his wife were separating. The mayor, who describes the relationship as a friendship that developed over time, is asking the media to respect his family’s privacy.
